Unearthing the mysteries of Prehistoric PEI
Featuring Will Beckett

On Tuesday, February 13, Island filmmaker/photographer Will Beckett brings his childhood fascination with prehistoric life to the Main Building Faculty Lounge on the UPEI campus, starting at 7 p.m. He will speak about the adventures behind his upcoming Web documentary series, Prehistoric PEI.
Will has spent the past three years making the first ever documentary about Prince Edward Island’s little-known prehistoric past — a journey that’s taken him as far as Philadelphia, PA, in his quest for an answer to the question: where have all of PEI’s fossils gone?!
 In 1845, a farmer unearthed one of Canada’s very first fossils in New London, PEI. Islanders still find fossils of plants and animals embedded in cliffs, lying openly on the beaches, and buried under the soil. The public seldom hears about these discoveries, and even more rarely do they get a chance to see them unless they visit museums in Ontario or Nova Scotia. PEI’s fossils paint a fascinating picture of a time long before the dinosaurs when the land teemed with a variety of life — echoes of which remain with us even today. Will’s lecture covers the inspiration for, and the information around, the documentary and the discoveries he’s made along the way. He’ll also offer a sneak peek of some of the footage, along with a brief, tantalizing glimpse of what Prince Edward Island looked like around 290 million years ago.
 Originally from St. Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, Will Beckett now lives in Charlottetown. He’s worked as a crew member on TV projects like CBC’s The Songs of Gene MacLellan and The Stats of Life. He’s also acted in commercials, and appeared in a hilarious bit part in the Island-produced feature film, Kooperman.
Admission to the lecture is free and everyone is welcome to attend.

NEW Master of Arts in Island Studies launches at UPEI this August: Island Tourism
You may be familiar with the University of Prince Edward Island’s well-respected thesis-based Master of Arts in Island Studies postgraduate program. In August 2018 we are launching a brand-new course- and work-study-based MA program to complement this thesis option.
In order to meet the growing global demand for professionals in the island tourism sector, the first cohort of 25 students will specialize in Island Tourism. This innovative program allows you to complete most of your classes online from anywhere in the world, with two short summer sessions on beautiful Prince Edward Island. Alternatively, you could complete your entire program on PEI. It also incorporates two work-study classes that allow you to work directly with island tourism organizations and companies.

Dr. Ed MacDonald becomes UPEI's latest
Island Studies Teaching Fellow
In December, UPEI's Dr. Ed MacDonald (History) was recognized as an Island Studies Teaching Fellow, in recognition of the work and dedication he brings to all things Island Studies.
Ed was the Institute of Island Studies' first Director of Research in the early 1990s and a long-time member of the IIS Advisory/Executive Committees. For the Master of Arts in Island Studies (MAIS) program, he serves on the Steering Committees and as a supervisor of MAIS students. He is also a tireless and award-winning researcher, author, and teacher, and passionate advocate for Prince Edward Island heritage and culture. In short, Dr. Ed embodies the spirit of an Island Studies Teaching Fellow. Previous recipients of the award include the late Dr. Barry Bartmann, and Drs. Godfrey Baldacchino, Palanisimay Nagarajan, and Brent MacLaine. Thank you, Ed, for all the things you do for us. We couldn't do all the things we do without you!
MAIS students honoured
At a gathering in the SDU Main Building Faculty Lounge on December 11, 2017, Master of Arts in Island Studies students were recognized for receiving scholarships from UPEI. Congratulations to Satyajit Sen, winner of the Bill and Denise Andrew Scholarships in Island Studies (Gold); Ian McIsaac, recipient of the Carnegie Foundation Graduate Scholarship in Island Studies; and Crystal Burrows, who received a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Joseph Armand Canada Graduate Scholarship for 2017-18. They are pictured below with MAIS Co-ordinator, Dr. Jim Randall.
In addition, Erin Rowan was recognized with the Erwin and Joyce Andrew Memorial Scholarship in Island Studies (International), and Mark Carr-Rollitt received a SSHRC Joseph Armand Canada Graduate Scholarship for 2017-18. And, finally, incoming MAIS students Adam Mahar and Emerald Naylor were awarded UPEI Entrance Scholarships.

UPEI Internal Publication Awards
The Vice-President Academic and Research will make available up to two awards per year to support the publication of manuscripts written or edited by UPEI faculty. The awards of $7,500 each will be disbursed to Island Studies Press to cover publication costs (including editing, photo and other permissions, design, printing, marketing, and other costs associated with publishing a book). Authors will be offered ISP’s standard publication contract, which ensures authorial copyright and includes a royalty structure. Authors will also see their manuscript reviewed through a peer-review process.
ELIGIBILITY: Manuscripts that are written and/or edited by UPEI faculty (including contract and sessional faculty) are eligible. These may be single-authored results of academic research projects; textbooks; edited proceedings of a conference; or works of fiction, creative non-fiction, poetry, or drama that pertain to the author(s)' discipline.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, 2018, to Research Services, Kelley Building Room 200 or electronically to researchservices@upei.ca.

Humans and Island Environments
16-20 April 2018 Manoa, Hawai'i
STILL LOOKING FOR ABSTRACTS ON SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIES
Organized by the Foundation for Environmental Conservation (FEC), East-West Center, and University of Hawai’i at Mānoa, the 7th International Conference on Environmental Future (7ICEF) seeks to advance the global and multi-disciplinary conversation around environmental futures with a specific focus in 2018 on ‘Humans and Island Environments’. The conference will be held 16–20 April 2018 in Honolulu, Hawai’i, at the East-West Center’s Imin International Conference Center.
The 7ICEF aims to provide a forum for discussion and debate on the current and future issues surrounding island environments, bringing together islanders, researchers, managers, and NGOs from a broad array of disciplines and fields. The underlying questions are: how have islands aided our understanding of human-environment interactions? What are the latest directions in island biological and cultural conservation? Where should island conservation efforts be focused? and, What conservation lessons do islands have for the rest of the world?
In advance of the conference, a review article for each of 18 conference themes will be published in the journal Environmental Conservation. As papers are published they will be listed here. These papers will be presented at the conference together with other related talks, and there will be dedicated time in each themed session for discussions, and question and answers. The final day of the conference will involve workshop sessions and a webcast panel discussion bringing together some of the unifying themes and messages.
