The Secret Sauce

Greetings! I hope the new year is treating you well so far. My year is starting off with a bang. Agent Bayne is doing awesome—it’s been on the Amazon Bestseller list for more than a week now, which is a pretty big deal. Right now it’s #1 in the categories LGBT Action & Adventure, and LGBT Mystery. I couldn’t be more pleased. When the series first started in 2006, I’m not sure if ebooks were even being sold on Amazon. The first title I listed on Amazon was a smexy Crash short called Many Happy Returns in December of 2007, two years before the Kindle hit the market. It’s so funny to think about needing to read your ebooks on a computer monitor or PDA. Or maybe not…I’ve actually cracked open an ebook on my desktop within the past week. I’m pretty old-school about doing things on the desktop that modern humans do on their phones!

Anyhow, the point I was leading up to is that the market has changed since PsyCop first began, and it’s a much bigger pond. I’m extremely pleased and heartened that readers are still enjoying the adventures of Victor Bayne. If you time-traveled back to 2006 and told me this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have been able to picture it. I often tell my writer friends, you never know which of your stories is gonna have legs.

Even though I’ve lived with Vic and Jacob for more than a decade now, I still glimpse new insights into what makes them tick. Recently I had an epiphany about them that I posted on Facebook, and a lot of folks responded. So I figured the PsyCop fans who don’t do social media might dig it, too.

I’ve got Jacob’s past two relationships sketched out in my mind: Crash, and before him, Jacob’s old colleague, Keith (from Keith and Manny P.I. fame, aka the gym rats who make Vic uncomfortable.) Both of those relationships ended when they couldn’t come to a balance between relationship and career.

Jacob and Vic got together thanks to physical attraction. But a big reason they stay together is that they can see eye to eye on the importance of their work, and they’re a team in more ways than one.

★★★★★

“The amount of growth Vic undergoes, something that has been building through the books, is so moving. Vic has been so stunted in his emotional life because of his experiences as a kid/teen/young adult, as this book shows, due, in large part to his talent. And to see him finally blossoming, letting people in, having friends (or more accurately admitting to those friends), his love for Jacob just made me feel so warm. JCP isn't known for writing fuzzy, warm feelings, she is a gritty writer, but this is as close as I have ever seen her write warm. The fact that it is Vic that is getting that treatment? Happy sighs.” -Allison Hickman

Status Report

PsyCop 10: It's in the works!

Agent Bayne Paperback: Several readers have mentioned the Agent Bayne paperback is out of stock at Amazon. It’s not uncommon for print-on-demand paperbacks to have a status like “1-2 week delivery” to account for the printing time. I suspect it says “out of stock” instead because I listed the paperback as a preorder, so it triggered some other status. But I also think they should start fulfilling any day now, since it’s been just about a week. Right now Barnes and Noble lists the paperback as being in stock, and I’m still waiting on the listing to reach Book Depository.

Agent Bayne Audio: Production is underway. I estimate the audio will be available mid to late February.

Mnevermind Audio: Book 3, Life is Awesome, is also getting its final spit-polish. It might be a toss-up which audio you’ll want to spend your credit on.

Mnevermind Collection: If you were waiting for Life is Awesome to be complete before you dug into the trilogy, you might want to hold out for the collection, which is a few short months away. Currently, plans are for the collected ebook and audiobook only. I’ll post solid dates as I have them, I just wanted to alert you that an omnibus was coming.
