Hello Math Community,

Happy New Year! We hope the break was rejuvenating for you and your students. We are energized for the next half of the year and look forward to working with you.

Featured Resource

Math Core Curriculum 101 Online Learning Module

Join the Math Core Curriculum 101 course using Google Classroom to refresh or strengthen your understanding of the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum. The class will support you to create a powerful math learning experience for each of your students. It will guide you to understand the why, the what, and the how of the SFUSD Math Core Curriculum. You will learn about the curriculum's guiding principles; its pedagogy; how it is structured; how to plan instruction with your colleagues; and how the 3 Signature Strategies support English Language Learners. Along the way you will do some fun and interesting math. 

Participants can use 2 hours of Prop A funds for successfully completing the course.

Core Curriculum News

Second semester units are all up and available online. They can be reached through Google Classroom, the Math Portals, or your Google Drive. Student and teacher materials for these units have all been delivered. If you haven’t yet had a chance to inventory your materials, please do so as soon as possible and let us know if anything is missing.

Be sure to visit the Math Department's YouTube Channel for video podcasts that describe units in the Core Curriculum.

Upcoming Math Professional Development

 

Math and SPED PLC

This PLC is open to all K-8 math educators, including SDC teachers, co-teachers, RSP teachers, general education teachers who support students with IEPs, paraprofessionals, IRFs, ARTIFs, coaches, and administrators. You will learn and work with your colleagues to:

  • support students with IEPs to access grade level math learning through essential understandings.
  • create a community of math educators who support students with IEPs to learn and share best practices.

  • prepare educators to become resources in their schools for providing access to rigorous grade level math for all students.
Each session is from 4:00 - 6:00 pm and will include both learning together time and working/planning together time. The third session date, topic, and location is:
  • Thursday, Mar 15, 2018: Sense-Making with Language-Rich Tasks, Everett Middle School

Opportunities for Educators

QTEA Professional Development Hours (Prop A)
This is a reminder that certificated, classified, and early education educators in SFUSD have 18 paid QTEA professional development hours available for use this school year! OPLL will award an end-of-year staff pizza party (or alternative meal of your choice) to the school with the highest usage data overall (including both certificated and classified usage).

Your annual hours can be used through June 2018. However, you need pre-approval from your supervisor to use your hours and need to make advance arrangements if you plan to use them in June. For more information, refer to this flyer. Contact Nora Houseman, QTEA Supervisor, for more information.

SFMTA Pi Day Prep
Come and get ready for Pi Day.  We will have various Pi Day activities for you to experience and take with you for Pi Day on March 14, 2018. For more information and to register, refer to this flyer.

Recent Activities

The second and third grade teams at Webster Elementary have been focusing on Complex Instruction (CI) strategies to encourage more equitable participation of all their students. CI aims to increase participation and learning for every child. Below is a sample math class norms poster and multiple abilities launch from a recent lesson on multiplication. Content Specialists continue to support math leadership teams with developing release day structures and a professional development calendar for the year.
