EAP January Dispatch

Dear EAP Alumni, Students and Friends,

Happy 2018!

The semester kicked off this past week and we are finalizing plans for our student and faculty trip to Chicago on March 15-16. See more below. Most important, we will be hosting a reception on the evening of March 15, which we hope those of you who are in Chicago can attend. Many thanks to Martha Goodell of Enigami Partners and Kim Frasso of SCB for coordinating this event and co-sponsoring!

We really enjoyed our weekly EAP seminar on "Professional Skills in Energy Analysis and Policy" this past fall. We had some stimulating discussions about how best to approach professional conferences, communicating our work, and networking. Appearances by EAP alums, describing their career paths, were a big hit. We will plan to hold the EAP seminar on a new topic next fall.

Finally, two big shout-outs to Professor Tracey Holloway and to Professor Paul Wilson. Tracey is the recipient of the Gaylord Nelson Distinguished Chair for 2017-2021, and Paul has recently been invested as the Grainger Professor of Engineering. If you see Paul or Tracey around campus, be sure to congratulate them!

As always, if you have any suggestions for how we could improve the EAP program or would like to connect with our community, please don't hesitate to contact me. And please do send in your short updates for inclusion in the next EAP Dispatch.

Sincerely,
Professor Gregory Nemet
Energy Analysis and Policy Program Chair

Upcoming Events

1. Mark your calendar for an upcoming EAP event: the Second Annual EAP Alumni/Student Forum on Monday, February 26th. The theme of this year's forum is Less is More: Advancements in Energy Efficiency Policies, Programs and Technologies.

This is a great opportunity for EAP alumni and students to socialize and share experiences with advancements in energy efficiency. Students and alumni: submit a short abstract for a forum presentation, discussing an advancement in energy efficiency. For more information, see the
EAP Facebook forum event page. To submit an abstract, email Dan York.

2. Stay tuned for more details about EAP's Earth Day Happy Hour. Exact date and location are TBD. More details to come.
EAP Seminar

Last month we finished our first EAP seminar on "Professional Skills in Energy Analysis and Policy". A highlight were real and virtual visits from EAP alums and friends who described their career paths. Many thanks to all involved! One student said: "Great course. Love the theme this semester on professional skills. This is a very helpful course with knowledge that is otherwise very difficult to gain."

SCB Student Paper Contest

For the second year, SCB Group has generously sponsored a student paper contest using work from Dr. Richard Shaten's energy markets class. Thanks, SCB! A panel will judge the papers and winners will be announced at the EAP Chicago reception on March 15.

Internship Opportunity

SCB Group has been a big supporter of EAP the past few years, and has a great internship opportunity for graduate students. SCB is a commodity brokerage firm providing brokerage services across the globe in biofuels, energy and agricultural markets. Operating from the commodity capitals of the world, they offer services in physical, listed and over-the-counter commodity derivatives. Their mission is to promote the adoption of a low-carbon future by facilitating transactions in renewable energy. For more internship information and to apply, click here.

Would you like to be more involved?

As we expand the EAP program, we aim to support connections among our alumni, and to link our students and recent grads with our growing community of energy alums. Would you like to get more involved in EAP? There are many opportunities, from hosting an event, to hiring an intern, to speaking about your career, or joining our alumni committee. Please feel free to reach out to EAP Chair Greg Nemet anytime with ideas of how you could support EAP, connect with colleagues, and engage with our amazing students.

2nd Annual EAP Trip to Chicago

On March 15-16, we will be taking a group of 15 students to our second annual EAP Trip to Chicago! This will be a two-day, all-expense-paid trip. We’ll be taking the group to meet with leading energy organizations and to explore the city. Last year was the first year we conducted this trip, and 100% of student attendees ranked it as “Excellent”! We hope this year is even better!

On the agenda are visits with: Elevate Energy, BP, Clean Energy Trust and SCB Group. We will be hosting a reception on the evening of March 15, which we hope those of you who are in Chicago can attend. Follow us on social media for updates about the trip and reception.
