Five Things To Do When Deciding To Go On A Mission Trip

by Chelsea Charles                                          January 2018

1. Pray about it

The best thing to do when beginning any endeavor is to take it to the Father in prayer. He alone holds the blueprint for our lives and He is the One who can give us the greatest direction for our lives. While thinking about going on a mission trip, take a little time to ask God if that is something He would like you to do.

2. Talk to someone about it
“Refuse good advice and watch your plans fail; take good counsel and watch them succeed.” Proverbs 15:22 (MSG)

When we reach out to others we trust in times of decisions, we are using great wisdom and we are more likely to see success in whatever it is we are doing. If you’re trying to decide whether or not you should go on a trip, talk to your parents, spouse, pastor, mentor, or someone you trust who is willing to tell you the truth, even if it hurts. They may be able to provide some insight and perspective as you consider going.

3. Do a little research

Read some blogs and go to a few websites to read up on what God is doing in the world today. Reading some blogs by people who have gone before you may help you get a vision for what you are getting yourself into. Other websites, such as shorttermmissions.org may be a resource for you as you seek out an organization or prepare to go on your adventure. Take the time to learn more about where you might be going as well. If you have a particular city or nation in mind, research some facts about it. This will not only give you direction in your decision, but it will also give you direction about how to pray for the people of that city or nation.

4. Ask others who have gone about their experiences

Along the lines of reading blogs by others who have gone, seek out those in your life who may have gone on a trip before you. So often, those who have gone on a trip are passionate about what they experienced and are excited to share those experiences with anyone who would ask. So ask! Catch their heart as they share the incredible stories of what God did in and through them on their trips and perhaps you’ll find you want to experience something like that, too!

5. Trust God

There are many who would like to go share the Gospel in another place but have doubts or fears about it. From finances to travel issues and all things in between, there are many reasons people hesitate. Many of those concerns are valid, however, we must remember that our God is always greater. If you are feeling like God is telling you to go to another part of your country or world to share about His great Son, Jesus, then He will provide the way. Take those concerns and worries to God in prayer and trust that He will take care of you.

No matter your decision, to go, to send, or to pray, we all have a great part to play in God’s great story. Know that you are important in the great narrative He is writing, the story of His glory and remember, missions starts right where you are.
