Donald Trump's funding cut to Palestinian agency UNRWA leaves refugees fearing 'a catastrophe'

UNRWA provides free schooling to half-a-million impoverished Palestinian children in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and in camps like the one Mr Ghanam lives in Lebanon.
It also supplies healthcare to millions who could not afford it otherwise and food aid to nearly one million Palestinians living in poverty in Gaza.
But the Trump administration has announced massive cuts to the UNRWA budget, freezing two planned payments worth more than $US100 million

Global NGOs criticise drastic US cuts of UNRWA funding

International NGOs have condemned the US government's decision to cut more than half of its planned funding to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees.
Kenneth Roth, executive director of Human Rights Watch, said in a Twitter post late on Tuesday that Washington was "holding Palestinian kids' humanitarian needs hostage to political agendas".

Belgium pledges €​19m extra aid to Palestinians to make up for Donald Trump’s funding cut

Belgium has reacted to Donald Trump’s decision to cut aid destined for Palestinians by pledging to donate an extra €19m (£17m) to help make up the shortfall.
The announcement came a day after the US slashed its funding for the UNRWA (United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) by $65m (£47m).
Alexander De Croo, Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister and international aid minister, said UNRWA was “the last lifebuoy” for many Palestinians.
