ERIGrid Opens the 4th Transnational Access Call
on 15 February

ERIGrid continues to provide open access to the smart grid and DER facilities of Europe‘s leading institutes and companies. The 4th call for ERIGrid Transnational Access will be opened on 15 February 2018. ERIGrid invites researchers and industrial professionals to gain free-of-charge access to laboratories of ERIGrid partners.

Costs of lab operation and support of the hosting staff are free of charge. Users' travel expenses, subsistence and accommodation costs will be reimbursed, subject to ERIGrid rules and regulations.

If you are interested to apply, please visit Transnational Access for detailed specifications of available laboratories, user eligibility, application guidelines and the user project proposal template.

ERIGrid opens calls for Transnational Access every 6 months.
ERIGrid Education and Training
Seminar “Enhance Power System Protection, Control & Security with Real-Time Simulation” at OFFIS, Oldenburg (DE), May 2017; Technical ERIGrid workshop at Tecnalia, Bilbao (ES), October 2016.

One of ERIGrid's goals is to actively contribute to educating power systems and ICT professionals, young researchers and students on the topics related to smart grid systems: smart grid operation, validation and testing, and rollout scenarios.

Through these activities, ERIGrid promotes the benefits that the concept of smart grids offers, such as reliability, efficiency and sustainability of the electrical energy system, and assists young researchers in creating new solutions for the emerging challenges.

In this context ERIGrid also carries out staff exchanges between the project partners. Having both industrial and academic researchers in the project consortium, ERIGrid ensures optimal sharing of infrastructures and strong collaborations within the project.

The detailed overview of ERIGrid educational activities can be found in the Education & Traning section of the ERIGrid website.
Presentations, teaching materials, and other resources are available for download.
Webinar Recording:
PHIL Simulation for DER and Smart Grids

On 5 December 2017 the ERIGrid consortium held a webinar on power hardware in the loop (PHIL) simulation for DER and smart grids showcasing best practices and experiences in the project.

Power Hardware in the Loop Simulation for DER and Smart Grids
Recording of the webinar on PHIL simulation

This webinar focused on the following topics:

  • Characteristics of PHIL simulation
  • Stability, accuracy issues, interface topologies and stabilisation methods
  • PHIL tests that show the value of the approach: DER inverters providing ancillary services, voltage-frequency control, microgrids, etc
  • Improved Hardware in the Loop (HIL) methods in the ERIGrid project
  • Live demonstration of HIL tests

You can find all slides from the webinar presentations here and the demo of hardware in the loop experiments here.

First ERIGrid Winter School
On 23-25 January 2018 the University of Strathclyde hosted the 1st ERIGrid Winter School “Metrology for Smart Grid Applications and HIL Testing” in Glasgow (UK).
Organised in collaboration with MEAN4SG and the National Physics Laboratory (NPL), the school provided a mixture of lectures, practical laboratory interactions with ongoing research projects, and a 1-day hands-on laboratory session.

ERIGrid in DERlab Activity Report

The 2016/2017 edition of the DERlab Activity Report demonstrates a vibrant community of laboratories, working on increasingly complex problems that are of strategic significance to the transformation of the energy sector with high shares of renewable generation. The new edition was released in October 2017 and the ERIGrid project is one of the report's highlights.

On pages 14-29 the report showcases how ERIGrid develops a holistic, cyber-physical systems based approach by integrating 18 European research centres with outstanding research infrastructures, including the topics:

  • Extensive interview with the ERIGrid Coordinator, Thomas Strasser (AIT) on ERIGrid's progress, challenges and future endeavours
  • Detailed information on ERIGrid Transnational Access
  • Research achievements and infrastructure upgrades of ERIGrid facilities
You can find the DERlab Activity Report for a free download here.
ERIGrid Consultation at European Utility Week: Presentation Slides Online
On 5 October ERIGrid held an open consultation at the European Utility Week 2017 in Amsterdam (NL). With this interactive presentation of the project and discussion, the ERIGrid consortium obtained feedback from industry representatives on the latest developments in the project.

The participants specifically looked into the holistic system integration and validation procedure developed in ERIGrid and project results on development and enhancement of simulation tools and methodology. The free Transnational Access to ERIGrid laboratories was also addressed in the discussions.

You can find all slides from the consultation here:
