NHS staff urged to get flu jab

Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies has urged all NHS staff to get the flu vaccination. Community pharmacies should be aware and consider ensuring your own staff are vaccinated. Pharmacies providing the NHS advanced flu service are also reminded that eligibility has now been extended to care-home and domiciliary care-workers. You may receive enquiries from staff in these sectors.

Addition for 2018/19 pharmacy flu service

Pharmacy Minister Steve Brine has confirmed in an answer to a parliamentary question that the community pharmacy seasonal flu vaccination service will be recommissioned again for 2018/19. He also said that next year it would include adjuvanted trivalent flu vaccine for use with the relevant patient cohort. You can find out more about the adjuvanted trivalent vaccine in this letter from NHS England to GPs and local teams.

PSNC is in discussions with the Department of Health about next year’s flu service but it seems likely that adjuvant trivalent vaccine will be prioritised for patients aged 75 and over. Community pharmacies may wish to bear this in mind when ordering next year’s vaccines.

Dispensing & Supply Factsheet: Information on medicines supply for patients (January 2018)

When community pharmacy teams struggle to source medicines, this can lead to queries from patients as to why there are delays. PSNC has therefore created this factsheet which provides some lines that could be used to explain the situation to patients.

Are you registered with the Information Commissoner's Officer (ICO)?

The new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) are due to come into force at the end of May. The first step towards compliance with both existing and future data protection law is to make sure you are registered with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

This costs £35 per year for most businesses at the moment, but the fees and banding criteria will change slightly from May. It’s a quick and easy process to register. Just visit the ICO website and follow the steps. All community pharmacies are data controllers (and processors), so keeping your registration up to date is a legal requirement under the Data Protection Act.

PSNC will be providing further guidance on GDPR in coming months.
