March 2014 - Dancing with Otto, who passed away late December 2017
Hi <<First Name>>,

Tomorrow is Robbie Burns Day, so some Scottish dances will be on the program!

For your interest, have a look at this article: Dancing can reverse the signs of aging in the brain.

As well as last week's dances, the New Year's Eve dance list is below as requested.

Extra events are optional and are listed here for your information. If a couple of hours of dancing once a week on Thursdays is as much as you want or can manage, that is fine!
  • Thursday, Feb 15, the school is not available - dancing will be in Dale's studio.
  • Wed, Feb 21, in the afternoon, Mother Language Day demonstration in Richmond. More details to come.
  • Sometime in April or later, demonstration at Weatherby Pavilion where Jeannette is living.
  • Pre-festival workshop with Sonia and Cristian, Thursday, April 19, 7-10pm.
  • Lyrids Folk Dance Festival, April 20-22, 2018. Featured teachers will be Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu. Registration is open!
  • Post-festival workshop with Sonia and Cristian, Tuesday, April 24, 7-10pm, at Charles Rummel Community Centre in Burnaby.
Happy Dancing,
Dale

In Memoriam: Otto Henning

The Surrey International Folk Dancers have lost a long-time folk dancer, Otto Henning, who passed away in early January. We will miss having Otto with us for our regular dance evenings and as a participant in our demonstration dances for community groups. Whether he was leading a dance, guiding others in the dance line or as a strong partner in a couples dance, Otto was able to help us all be better dancers.  No one will forget his enthusiasm for a polka or for singing along with his favorite music.

Otto loved to learn other languages and to travel. Many winters, he spent a month or more in Mexico or Thailand, taking a break from his work as a carpenter. SIFD dancers enjoyed seeing his photos and hearing stories of his adventures, and were regularly recipients of his willingness to lend books.

Otto was fond of the older dances in the international folk dance collection; in Surrey, we will think of Otto whenever we dance Tino Mori. Surrey Folk Dancers extend their condolences to his close friends and family.

On January 6, 2018, Otto Henning, long time dancer and friend to many, hung up his “Opanka’s” for the last time.

Otto was one of the small number of men who could dance beautifully and make his partners look good too!  He participated in folk dancing groups in Vancouver, Burnaby, and Surrey, British Columbia.  Otto was a very popular partner as he seemed to make dancing look easy as he “sang and laughed” – an “ever patient partner!”

When his children were small some came and danced much to our delight!  And on occasion we were treated to a solo piano performance by his daughter, Barbie, who wasn’t tall enough to see the keyboard.  He was so very proud of them all.

I expect he will continue dancing with equal enthusiasm in the “next world”!

OPAH, Otto! Until we dance again.
