Welcome to Term 1 2018!

Dear MitCon Community,

Happy New Year!

Our admin teams are back in the office, and preparations for the teaching and performing year are in full swing.
I can honestly say that I'm thrilled to be back from a terrific break, and I hope that you and your families were able to find some time to spend in recreation together over the last six weeks or so.
2018 is looking exciting from our perspective, with a number of firsts on offer, and also a return for the majority of our wonderful teaching team.

First up, I'd like to welcome a couple of new members to the teaching team, Peter Urquhart - violin, composition, and choral teacher, Jack Dodds - Early Childhood Music and Martyn Cook - Music Therapy and woodwind, also working out of Lithgow and Bathurst. Sadly, we are saying goodbye to Greg Holdaway, who has been offering Alexander Technique coaching out of Bathurst studios for many years now. Greg has just become too successful with his practice in Sydney and the Blue Mountains! We know this won't be goodbye for ever, Greg, but till we meet again... We're also farewelling David Shaw - but again, I'm sure we'll not being seeing the last of him around the Central West.

Saturday week, Feb 3, opens our performance event calendar for the year, with the renowned Jazz Vocalist, Emma Pask (Yes, that Emma Pask, from the Voice...) performing AND giving a vocal masterclass for students. Emma will be performing on the Balcony at MitCon Bathurst, and we'll be teaming up with Vale Creek Wines and local food providers to create a special 90 minute event up close and personal in the coolest 'new' venue in Bathurst. Tickets still available, but more than 50% have already sold. So if you're interested in being a part of it... get in quick!

I'm personally thrilled that we will be starting a new chamber choir this term. VOX will be directed by Michelle Griffin, as an extension of Mitchell Young Voices, and as a vehicle for some exciting, largely a cappella, choral adventures for broken voices. We'll also be starting a great new music reading program for adults, in association with our affiliate choir, the Allegri Singers, starting this term on  a Wednesday night, running weekly for the whole year. If you'd love to be in a choir, but can't read music... or if you are already in a choir, but would like to brush up your music reading skills... then the Learn to Read Music class is for you. With funding from NSW Sing Your Age program... we are able to charge just $10 per term! So, make this your new Wednesday night habit... for what age group you ask? Yours is perfect!

After many years of planning and assessing, we are finally implementing a new web-based database program at MitCon. this will result in a number of internal administrative changes, with just a few things apparent to paying members. There will be a couple of changes to the appearance of the invoices, and some minor changes to charges. please don't hesitate to send a query to admin if you have any difficulties that may relate to the new system. We don't anticipate any issues, but as with anything new, the changeover is bound to have the odd bug.  We'll appreciate your understanding if anything does arise.

And to close, a quote from a leading U.S. neuroradiologist on the impact music has on the brain: "It's fantastic. What else can do that? I can't think of anything other than music."
There is no shortage of info out there supporting the fact that music has truly transformative powers. This little article is one of many, but I think it's a beauty...

Wine, Dine & Jazz with Emma Pask

Come and join one of Australia’s favourite voices in Jazz, the divine Emma Pask, for an intimate evening of food, wine and Jazz.! Tickets to this event are limited to 100 only and there will not be a better way to get so up close and personal with such an amazing artist!

You will enjoy a evening of fabulous music on our stunning balcony, right in the centre of Bathurst. Dine on a gourmet platter and sip delicious wine from Vale Creek Wines while you take in the view overlooking the gorgeous Kings Parade!

Award winning vocalist Emma Pask was first spotted by multi instrumentalist James Morrison during one of his regular visits to high schools when she was just 16 years old. Emma first sang with James’ band that night and their musical collaboration has continued to entertain audiences nationally and internationally over the past 20 years.

There have been many musical highlights throughout Emma’s career. By request, in 2006, she performed the Bridal Waltz for Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s wedding. She has been awarded a ‘mo’ for Jazz Vocalist of the year, received ARIA award nominations and has performed for VIP audiences including the late Diana Princess of Wales and Princess Mary of Denmark.

2013 saw Emma take part in series 2 of ‘The Voice’ Australia. Her Coach, Ricky Martin, was so impressed with Emma’s vocal ability, after she performed ‘Mas Que Nada’ in both English and Portuguese he announced to the world that he would like to invite Emma to record with him on his upcoming Album.

This will be an evening not to be missed as Emma performs a 90 min set alongside the incredible Kevin Hunt on Piano.

Gourmet platters and wine from local vineyard, Vale Creek Wines will accompany the performance.
