Alliance Newsletter 26 January 2018

GLOBAL ALLIANCE OF NGOs FOR ROAD SAFETY

Newsletter | 26 January 2018

Dear Friends,

2018 will see some exciting new initiatives from the Alliance, including the new-format Alliance Advocate training in Africa in March and Asia in October. The training will be based on a data project and will equip participants to replicate the approach in their own countries.

The Pillar Working Groups are currently preparing for the next meeting of the UNRSC—we will be sharing their progress in upcoming newsletters.

We look forward to another year of working together to save lives on the road.

Yours Sincerely,

Lotte Brondum
Executive Director

ALLIANCE ADVOCATES 2018: LEARNING THROUGH A REAL-LIFE PROJECT
The next Alliance Advocate training will be held in Kenya in March 2018. Members from around Africa will gather to take part in a real-life demonstration project based on two school zones in Nairobi. During the training, they will gather data and analyze it using different tools, develop key messages and present them to decision makers, and create an action plan to replicate the project in their home countries.

HALVING ROAD DEATHS COULD INCREASE GDP BY 22% IN LMICs
Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) could increase their gross domestic product (GDP) by up to 22% if road deaths were halved in their countries according to The High Toll of Traffic Injuries, a new report by the World Bank. The report studies the economic effects of road traffic crashes in five LMICs: China, India, the Philippines, Tanzania, and Thailand. Its findings provide strong financial motivation for governments to focus their attention on cost-effective road policy changes and interventions that will enable them to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3.6. ADVOCATE PILOTS SAFE SCHOOL CAMPAIGN IN CAMEROON
At Government Bilingual High School Nyalla in Douala, Cameroon, between one and three students suffer road traffic injuries every week. 2017 Alliance Advocate Ngochia Fidelis of Cameroon Association for the Defence of Victims of Accident (CADVA) is focusing on improving students’ safety around this school and two others in the city. Informed by a pre-assessment, CADVA is taking a multi-pronged approach: addressing the most urgent need by providing a crossing guard and training the students, while advocating with decision makers and engaging media to gain public attention.

Ultimately, CADVA’s target is for road safety measures and 20 kilometers per hour speed limits around all schools in Cameroon by 2020. Read more HERE.
GRSP ROAD SAFETY GRANTS PROGRAMME
This month, the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) announced the 13th round of its Road Safety Grants Programme. Proposals are invited for projects addressing national policy reform and/or its implementation in China, India, Philippines, Tanzania, and Thailand and, for projects tackling implementation of one or more behavioral risk factors at city level in Bangkok, Fortaleza, Mumbai, and Shanghai. The deadline is 6 February 2018 at 14:00 CET. Read more HERE
BLINK: BE A STAR AT NIGHT
Alliance member Kids Non-Profit Organization (KNPO), Sweden, has launched a new free smartphone app, named BLINK, that detects when a user is walking or running and emits a flashing light through the screen on the front and the flashlight on the back. Designed with nighttime joggers in mind but equally adaptable to pedestrians, the Blink app makes runners and walkers more visible to traffic passing in the dark, enabling the user to be seen from five times further away. KNPO invites Alliance members to contact the organization about adding instructions in other languages or distributing the app via their own channels.

Click HERE to read more or HERE to access the app on KNPO’s website.
