Nassar
+ Michigan State Prez Simon has resigned. In a letter, "To the survivors, I can never say enough that I am so sorry that a trusted, renowned physician was really such an evil, evil person who inflicted such harm under the guise of medical treatment. I know that we all share the same resolve to do whatever it takes to avert such tragedies here and elsewhere. […] As Nassar’s legal journey to prison was drawing to a close, more and more negative attention was focused on Michigan State University, and on me. I am pleased that statements have been made by Mr. Fitzgerald and Board members about my integrity and the fact that there is no cover-up. I support wholeheartedly the Board’s decision to ask the Attorney General’s Office to review the events surrounding the Nassar matter. […] Anyone who knows me knows I am a principled person. I have spent my entire professional career, more than 40 years, at MSU. I love this place. I have watched it grow and prosper, and it has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve as its president since 2005, and over the last few years, to have the opportunity to work with all of you toward our shared goals for MSU. I will continue to do whatever I can to help MSU prosper in the future as a Spartan in whatever role I may play." (link)
+ Inside Higher Ed's Seltzer: "When Is a President Accountable for What She Didn't Know?" Of note, "Sometimes, stepping down might be a final act of necessary leadership if a campus truly needs a new president in order to move on from past events. Still, it should also be noted that a president’s ouster is not a cure-all for issues -- structural or otherwise -- laid bare in cases involving sexual assault or harassment." (link)
+ Spartans AD Hollis says his department will provide full cooperation with the NCAA's probe into the matter. "Since my first day on the job as athletic director, my focus has always been on the student-athlete. They are at the core of our athletic department mission statement. Our first priority has always been and will always be their health and safety." Full letter from the NCAA included. (link)
+ WaPo's Jenkins: "USA Gymnastics allowed Larry Nassar to prey upon innocent victims. Congress must investigate." Thesis: "It's only the worst sex abuse scandal in the history of sports — and maybe in the history of this country." (link)
+ USA Today's Wolken: "NCAA ill equipped to do anything about Michigan State's handling of Larry Nassar." Thesis: "Given the organization’s recent troubled history of trying to get its arms around issues outside its rulebook, dealing with something the magnitude of Michigan State is baffling at best and calculated grandstanding at worst." (link)
More clarity on the AD search at Louisville as a search firm will now be hired to assist with the process. Maybe more importantly, Interim AD Tyra says he will be in the running for the permanent gig. Interim Prez Postel downplays Tyra's assumed inside track & former BoT members endorse measures of professionalism around the hiring, while leading local media voice Crawford calls the addition of a search firm, "silly." Put these pieces together as you'd like. (link, linklink, link); Reports also hit the wire yesterday, thanks to ESPN MBB analyst Dakich, that the NCAA has denied U of L's penalties appeal. However, Tyra says the misinformation is "unfortunate" & there's been no communication yet from Indianapolis. (link)
"You can ask me that question a thousand times, and that answer is going to be, 'if that day comes, you are going to know it.' It is the same answer I have always said: We are not looking right now to get into another league." As you might guess, that's BYU AD Holmoe, who also believe the Cougars are in a better spot currently as an independent than in a non-'Power 5' league. Holmoe also notes ongoing discussions with Notre Dame on when Fighting Irish FB will play in Provo, serious negotiations expected within the next year on an extended deal with ESPN, the belief BYU-Utah FB showdowns should continue & no bowl tie-ins for 2018 leave his program as a "free agent." (link)
Oregon boss & new College Football Playoff selection committee chair Mullens indicates he'll put himself through some media training to prepare for the deluge of questions stemming from each rankings show. Mullens also notes the "whirlwind" schedule he's held the last couple of months as a FB HC change, CFP duties & his normal responsibilities leading the Ducks have been piled on top of one another. On making a new FB hire in two consecutive cycles, "It is stressful, highly stressful. We made a lot of progress in a year in changing the culture, in generating buzz and interest. We had a great start and a strong finish in the last two games. It was disappointing. But you play the cards you’re dealt, and when those dominoes did fall and the decisions were made, we were prepared to move forward to make sure we were doing what was right for the University of Oregon." More, including a wait-and-see attitude on how tax changes could impact giving, as well as FB scheduling & Pac-12 TV thoughts. (link)
Legality aside, Louisiana Governor Edwards calls for cap on FB coaching salaries, "This is an arms race, and it’s gotten out of control. Some of the salaries and buyouts are obscene, and they can create all sorts of problems. Everybody at this table knows that those are not taxpayer dollars, but the general public doesn’t necessarily know that. And what about those faculty members at LSU and elsewhere who haven’t had a raise of any size in many, many years and they’re seeing what’s happening in athletics? [...] I don’t blame any individual for getting what the market will bear. I just don’t think the market should bear that." Six of the top seven highest-paid employees in the state last year were in athletics. (link)
Alabama's FY17 results: $174.3M in operating revenues against 158.7M in expenses, equaling a $15.6M profit. FB metrics: $108.2M in revenues over $62.3M in expenses, in the black by $45.9M. TV contracts & other rights = $43.9M. Contributions = $32.9M as AL.com's Casagrande wonders how the new federal tax legislation may impact that number. Overall, '17 total revenue was up by $10M+, but EOY profit decreased by $3.1M. (link)
CAA Commish D'Antonio continues his regiment of practicing with championship programs around the league, this time it was UNC Wilmington MBB's turn to host the boss. D'Antonio donned number '0' with the Seahawks, along with some "rec specs" & clearly needs to work on his screening technique. "It's a way for me to say thank you for what they do at UNCW. Thank you for the way they carried themselves and represented the CAA, and congratulate them on being champions. It's a great way to interact with the student athletes you would never have an opportunity to." (link)
Powerful words from former Washington State FB student-athlete Falk from Senior Bowl proceedings on his late Cougars teammate Hilinski, "It should be talked about, and we should do something about it. I feel like at times we feel like we can’t express our emotions because we’re in a masculine sport and him being a quarterback, people look up to you as a leader. He felt like he really probably couldn’t talk to anybody. We’ve got to change some of that stuff. We have to have resources and not have a stigma of people going to that. […] For it being such a big part of our culture, you never hear it talked about. You never hear people feeling like they’re able to speak openly. We’re in such a masculine culture, people don’t feel comfortable doing it. […] I think Tyler and I are going to be tied forever now. I think that we really need to do something about [suicide]. I want to be a guy that has something to do with it." (link)

Which one of you will be the first to sell an "official blockchain partner?" English Premier League club Arsenal is believed to be the first major club to have an official cryptocurrency. (link); Mid-sized cities are back en vogue for airlines as lower fuel costs & marketplace competition have led to the likes of American & United introducing dozens of new non-stop routes. Cities mentioned: Fort Wayne, Appleton, Akron. One challenge: Adding more gates & availabilities at mid-sized airports. (link)

Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner reports the Pac-12 Networks will restructure its team, which will include the elimination of some senior-level spots. In his Hotline newsletter, Wilner writes, "The heavy operating costs and relatively modest revenue streams simply cannot produce the cash flow needed (and expected) by the campuses. But the Pac-12 Networks, it seems, are stuck on both ends, with no magic revenue bullets and no escape from the expense shackles. […] Eliminate the regional feeds altogether? Turn them into streaming-only services for the Olympic sports? Great ideas, except Comcast and Co. would almost certainly insist on revising the contracts. They aren’t paying the same price for less content. There are six years left on the Pac12Nets current distribution deals and no easy solutions." (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt says he can push more cash to FB HC Kingsbury to build his staff & the amount of "more" is dictated by the caliber of candidates. Kingsbury is on the hunt for a new OC, plus two other assistants. Hocutt: "To a large degree, it’s twofold: One, it’s market-based, and then secondly, it’s dependent upon the caliber of individuals that we attract." Hocutt also notes the difference between actual money available to pay contract upgrades versus the three main focus points of current fundraising campaigns, "...it’s been my experience that while donors are interested in a plethora of initiatives and opportunities that they look to, more times than not, the athletic department to fund our compensation and benefits and personnel costs." (link)
Police were called to McCarthy Hall, the Kansas MBB dormitory, yesterday after reports of a man showing up "to give a resident there some free-throw advice." The Jayhawks went just 6-of-14 from the stripe in Tuesday's loss at Oklahoma and student-athlete Azubuike went 0-for-6 in the final 3:37 of the 5-point loss. The man was not a KU student and had left by the time police arrived. (link)
Facility Notes: Oklahoma will increase the size of its FB scoreboard on the south end of Owen Field by 3x. Estimated cost: $4.3M. Sooners AD Castiglione: "We want our facilities to feel like they are a part of the campus, not just look like add-ons." (link); The sound system enhancements at Cincinnati's Nippert Stadium are underway as crews begin to install a new sound system to accompany the new LED video display that was put in before the season. (link); UMBC's new $85M Event Center will open February 3. The 172K square foot, 6K-seat facility will serve athletics as home to the basketball and volleyball teams and the university as an auditorium. (link)
It's Personnel: Oregon tabs Arkansas Asst. AD for Communications Pierson as its new Assoc. AD for Communications with responsibilities tied to FB. (link); Portland AD Leykam promotes AC Baxter to take over the Pilots' Women's Volleyball program. (link); Sounds like Nicholls State FB HC Rebowe is getting a new deal. (link); USF Women's Soccer HC Schilte-Brown sees her contract extended through 2022. (link); Former Ole Miss FB HC Freeze spoke at Liberty, "I had to say to people that I love, 'I am sorry. Please forgive.' Today is really the first day that I can tell the faith family I am sorry. Please forgive me." (link); Washington State WBB HC Daugherty says she needs some "additional time to rest & heal" after a recent medical procedure. (link); BTN host Revsine is battling Bell's palsy. (link); Looks like USC FB OC Martin has signed with Roc Nation Sports for representation. (link)
As the discussion around legalized sports gambling continues, the NBA wants 1% of all monies wagered on its games to account for added costs the league would incur as part of the development. NBA EVP for Communications Bass on the 1%, which could be a massive new revenue stream, "This is a similar approach to legally-regulated sports betting in other international jurisdictions." The NBA is also pushing for wider access to gambling platforms, including on smartphones & at kiosks. The American Gaming Association pushes back hard on how the 1% would negatively impact those taking the bets & keep lots of money on the underground market. (link, link)

Arizona AD Heeke indicates FB ticket prices for 2018 will not increase, even with the hire of new HC Sumlin, which has been met with positive reviews all around & even with having seven home games next season after just six in 2017. Three ticket tiers will actually be reduced, though there is a new $30 charge per ticket for some premium areas to cover buffet, snacks & beverage options. The ZonaZoo's space is getting new restrooms, concession stands & "gathering spaces." More Heeke: "Eventually, we will renovate most, if not all, of Arizona Stadium and modernize the fan experience, but it will happen in phases." (link)
"The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has signed a voluntary resolution with the University of Iowa over a 2015 complaint about gender discrimination in athletics, despite finding gaps in how men and women are treated in Hawkeye sports." The resolution was signed Dec. 29 by Hawkeyes AD Barta and requires UI to prove by January 30 that it was in compliance last year. The statement from Iowa: "The OCR found no violation of any regulation under Title IX. The resolution concludes the OCR’s investigation and was effective January 10, 2018. The university has agreed to provide additional reporting through the spring to substantiate its continued compliance under Title IX." Attorneys representing the former Field Hockey student-athletes who filed the complaint called the resolution a "slap in the face" for females. During FY16, the athletic department spent an average of $4,249 per male student-athlete on equipment and supplies, compared to just $2,012 on their female counterparts. Assuming deadlines are met, the most recent year's figures should be available by next month. (link)
The Tennessee Comptroller's Office released an audit yesterday that found two Tennessee athletic department employees guilty of accepting impermissible golf trips and other benefits in 2014 and 2016. Director of Sports Surface Management Seybold accepted paid golf trips and related entertainment from a department vendor in excess of the $75 allowed limit. The second UT employee (not named) joined Seybold for a day at the 2014 Masters using tickets from a prospective vendor. The audit revealed "several deficiencies" that contributed to the missteps, "namely, university officials did not require and document periodic training for employees related to its gift acceptance policy, and officials 'did not adequately supervise or oversee some trips by university employees traveling on university time.'" Vanderbilt set to launch the "I am More" campaign to highlight student-athletes accomplishments outside of sports. SAAC Prez DeFabrizio: "You have great academics and great athletics, and there are so many at Vanderbilt who embrace things outside of your athletic role. Your world doesn't have to end at athletics; you have a world outside of McGugin. And that's not just an ad pitch. That's true to form to what Vanderbilt is about." A different student-athlete will be featured every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. (link)
