'As an art collector, Glen Bjørnholt often refers to art as a question that does not provide an answer – or perhaps a window or lens. He cites philosopher Isaiah Berlin and his classic essay The Hedgehog and the Fox. Here, Berlin expands upon the idea that writers and thinkers fall into one of two categories: hedgehogs, who view the world through the lens of a single defining idea - and foxes, who draw on a wide variety of experiences and for whom the world cannot be boiled down to a single idea.

Bjørnholt is the latter – as both a person and a collector. He embraces art without strict programmatic ambitions, viewing artworks for their individual merit. “I care about whether art is good in my own eyes, not in the eyes of others or even if they fit in the vantage point of the collection,” he says. That being said, the collection spans a wide breadth of artists and mediums but holds a common thread. The commonality is a sense of risk and responsibility – from the artist, but also matched by the collector. These values create the core of Bjørnholt’s collection.

Over the past years, the international art world has witnessed a blossoming Norwegian art community. Government resources have allowed for substantial grants for young artists, allowing for an environment in which artists thrive. While supporting these home-turf artists, a handful of collectors have looked outside Norway to build collections that at once reflect the most current developments in contemporary art, while contextualizing Scandinavian art at the same time. Since leaving Deutsche Bank Art Collection in 2013, I have assisted Bjørnholt in building out such a collection and realizing his vision. Bjørnholt Collection as it stands today reflects the collector’s agility and conviction in which he embraces artists. Ranging from 83-year old Rose Wylie to emerging and distinctive African-American artists Erick N. Mack and Torey Thornton, and Norwegians Fredrik Vaerselv and Yngve Holen, the collection proves true to its core values.'
