The spring semester is off to a great start as 170 students are adjusting to life at Harlaxton Manor. In the last month, they participated in Harlaxton staples such as Opening Convocation, house sorting, Ceilidh, and Afternoon Tea.

Burns Night
The Manor celebrated Burns Night on 25 January in The Bistro. Students enjoyed traditional haggis and whiskey while hearing Burns poems and Scottish music. The evening later transitioned into an Open Mic when several students performed original poetry.

A Harlaxton Legacy
Beth Nelson studied at Harlaxton in the spring of 1991. Now her daughter, Grace, is following in her footsteps. Grace is studying with us this semester, and she shared how it feels to be here 27 years after her mother.

“Since I was little, I have seen pretty much every single photo she took when she was here and have been in awe at the fact that my mother was, in my eyes, a world traveler of sorts,” Grace said. “Somewhere in our house she still has her class photo from when she was here, and I constantly wondered who those people were and how they and Harlaxton had made such a profound impact on her life.”

“Growing up, she constantly told me stories of her time at the Manor. One of her favorite stories to tell was one of the first weekends they were here, most of the students had gone on trips, but her and a few others hung back. That was the weekend a freak blizzard came through England, and everything was covered in snow. She and the other students who had stayed behind decided to go out to the front circle and build a snowman and dress it up in the likeness of the principal at the time, Angus Hawkins.”

Her mother’s experience even helped her decide to go to University of Evansville. “In my college decision process, Mom was very supportive through all of it. But the thing she constantly said to me throughout it was, ‘I don’t care what school you decide to go to, but you have to make time to go to Harlaxton.’”

“To know that I am walking and living in the same corridors that I have heard about all my life is surreal in a way that no amount of words can describe. Harlaxton was truly a fairy tale for me when I heard my mom talk about it. When we pulled up to the front gates the first night, a wave of relief and awe had come over me. We had finally come full circle. The stories and adventures my mom told me about were finally right in front of my eyes. This is the place that my mom got to call home. And now I get to call Harlaxton home too.”

Academics

Dr. Megan Janasiewicz
Harlaxton Director of Student Development, Dr. Megan Janasiewicz, graduated from the University of Georgia in December. She now holds a PhD in College Student Affairs Administration.

Dr. David Green's Appearance on A Stitch in Time
British faculty member Dr. David Green recently made an appearance on BBC’s A Stitch in Time, a series that studies clothing throughout history and seeks to recreate the clothing through the most traditional means possible. Green was featured to discuss Edward the Black Prince with Amber Butchart. With a VPN, you can watch the episode at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09q047h

Dr. Amber Pouliot at MLA Conference
Dr. Pouliot recently spoke on a panel at the 2018 Modern Language Association Convention in New York. Her topic was “Anxious Pedagogies: Negotiating Precarity and Insecurity in the Classroom.” She heavily focused on how students and faculty have experienced high levels of anxiety in the classroom and working toward a solution.

Gold Room Lecture: Netta Clavner
On 22 January, Netta Clavner gave a Gold Room Lecture to our students in preparation for their British studies trip to Lincoln. Netta is a postgraduate student of art history at Birkbeck University of London. Her research focuses on images of royalty in fourteen and early fifteen-century England. The lecture focused on Lincoln Cathedral’s façade and heavily discussed The Gallery of Kings. So many students attended the lecture that facilitators had to bring in extra chairs.

Travel

London
During the first long trip of the semester, Harlaxton took 140 of its students to London. That is the most students Harlaxton has ever taken on a trip! Students enjoyed their free time while also exploring Hampton Court Palace as a whole group.

Some students visited the Tower of London with Harlaxton during their London trip. They marveled at The Crown Jewels while exploring the history that the Tower offers.

Lincoln
The entire Harlaxton class took a British studies field trip to Lincoln last week. Along with having free time in the city, they each toured the famous Lincoln Cathedral.

The Manor

House Competitions
House competitions are in full swing as all four houses are battling for the coveted golden key to the Manor. Students have competed in a series of puzzles, a pub quiz, basketball, volleyball, and a new competition that combines Pictionary, charades, and Jeopardy!

Students put their trivia skills to the test at the Pub Quiz!

Newton took home the victory in the basketball house competition.

The Manor on Screen: Victoria
Harlaxton Manor recently made another appearance on the screen! The PBS television show, Victoria, used Harlaxton’s exterior and some interior rooms for an episode that aired in the United States on 28 January. In the episode, Queen Victoria visits a French château. Since a few of Harlaxton’s rooms have several French influences, the Manor made a perfect backdrop for the episode.

Tea Time

The Manor will be hosting a Mother’s Day tea this year. More details will come in our next newsletter!

The Community

Meet-A-Family Dinner
Our traditional “Meet-A-Family” Dinner took place on 10 January. We welcomed families from the community who “adopted” some of our students. The families enjoyed wine punch and an elegant dinner as they got to know their new “children.” Several families have already done extra events with our students, such as brunches, teas, day trips, and Burns Night festivities.
