Teacher Appreciation

Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner.  This is a time when our dedicated and loving WSA teachers spend long hours at school making the time to meet with all of their parents to share individually about each student.

It also means our parent community gets the opportunity to show them our appreciation and gratitude for all they do!  We are looking for a small group of parents to provide savory&sweet foods to nourish our teachers through the day on Wednesday, February 14th.

Please consider signing up for either a savory or sweet donation and note which location you are choosing: Reception Office (Education building) or the Kitchen in the Admin Office.  Please deliver between 8am-1pm at the designated location on the 14th.

2018-19 Enrollment for Current Families

If you are a family currently enrolled at WSA, you will receive an enrollment agreement for the 2018-19 school year during the mid-winter break via email. The agreement will reflect the tuition for the upcoming school year, which will be set at next week’s Board meeting. Enrollment agreements will need to be completed on-line by March 7. For families on tuition assistance, the deadline to submit your request has been extended to February 12 (this coming Monday). The link is available on our website under the Admissions tab. The Tuition Assistance Committee will review requests the following week and plan to email enrollment agreements to families on tuition assistance no later than March 9; the response date will be approximately ten days from the date the agreements are sent. Since we depend on timely submission of agreements in order to set our budget for next year, we will continue to impose a late fee for agreements returned after the deadlines. Please direct any questions about this schedule to Stacey Alston at salston@waldorfatlanta, and any questions about tuition assistance to Latonia Yarbrough at finance@waldorfatlanta.org.

Admissions Applications for Siblings from Current Families

INTRO TO BIODYNAMICS

Sunday, March 11, 2018
9:00 AM  12:00 PM

Growing organically is great, but it only scratches the surface of how deeply interconnected all the forces that go into plant and animal growth really are. Discover the atmospheric factors critical to plant growth, the growth gestures of plants, the role of lunar cycles and how biodynamics channels this knowledge into a holistic, closed system free from dependence on external inputs.  Enjoy a thorough introduction to biodynamic preparations and explore the intimate connections between soil and sky, animal and plant.

Join Darby Weaver, head farmer at Timpson Creek Farm, for an afternoon of Biodynamic growing instruction. During this workshop, the guiding principles of Biodynamic Agriculture will be highlighted and practical approaches to utilizing them on your own farm or garden will be detailed.
COST: $40; $30 for Homestead Atlanta Members.
Reserve your spot at

Academe of the Oaks News

Every year, Academe seniors have the unique opportunity to work as interns. The internship is in conjunction with the Economics main lesson block, and each senior participates in a two-week internship in a local organization, becoming acquainted with the practical, day-to-day operations of "real-world" enterprise. Academe students have elected to intern in a variety of organizations and environments, including restaurants, banks, law offices, labs at Georgia Tech and Emory University, museums, and retail stores.  Rachel interned at the Yerkes Center where she had a chance to study Parkinson's Disease. Here is her summary about her work:

"At my Senior Internship with Dr. Yoland Smith at the Emory Yerkes National Primate Research Center I learned about neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's Disease (PD) and studied brain tissue. I was able to compare normal brain tissue with PD infected tissue and come to conclusions about the progression of the disease. During my internship, I also had the opportunity to sit in on college and graduate level courses in neuroscience taught by Emory professors, contribute to Dr. Yoland's meetings with his staff on research, and use the electron microscope to identify and study neurobiology in tissue. I also had the privilege to work closely with many of Dr. Yoland's lab personnel and learn about their current research. I am very lucky to have had this experience, especially as a high school student!"
