Summer Newsletter February 2018
This newsletter has been in the pipeline right through January, but juggling grandchildren and overseas visitors has been prioritized!
I hope this finds most of us in a better spot weather-wise-after an eight week dry through November and December, we are in a much better situation now, with two good rainstorms 50 mls and 55mls, then a 15mls follow up… Grass growth, which had barely recovered from the wet, wet spring and pugging damage, has made a rapid recovery, though kikuyu is dominating… We were within a couple of days of beginning to feed out our mob, and replacement supplements will be expensive this year… though late hay and baleage is on the cards again now. Over on the sandhills, the cattle were surviving on “hard tack”, poor quality standing hay-the maturing animals thrived, but it was tough on the dairy beef weaners; the fresh feed has arrived just in time for perking them up…

I hope everyone enjoyed seeing the Willow Creek team and ‘Whiskey’ starring on the cover of the New Zealand Farmer, we were delighted that Ron Coomber picked up on the story and distributed it throughout the international Salers community… Well done to the whole Woolley/Pacey team, who have gone on achieving in the show ring-they have scored the top beef prizes everywhere they have been, with Whiskey winning Supreme again, and even better, the depth through the team confirmed with young bull Hercules and heifer Shiraz, taking top honours.. Their 2018 summer/autumn campaign is mapped out, with another 6 shows planned… Young handlers Michaela McCracken and Andrea Scott should be on board too.. Karen has also qualified as an "inter-breed judge” for when she retires from showing her own cattle, so, no slowing down there!

The International tour details are not confirmed yet, but we do have final French dates, which should make it safe to book those international flights…(it looks as though we will be fitting in a stopover in Istanbul, as our son is about to head over there to work for an English-language, Turkish TV station; then we will need to visit family in the UK; so all we need to find is a reliable farm sitter…). The communication we have from Audrey Maurice is as follows - “The Groupe Salers Evolution is pleased to confirm the International Tour days will be, from Thursday, 27 September to Saturday, 6 October 2018”… I will continue to forward all relevant emails from our International President, Ron Coomber, as they come through.

We have also had a request from France, for some farm work/farmstays for Eva Locilla, who is a niece of M.Jacques Phialip, breeder of the Brousse Salers, renowned for moderate framed, fleshy type… Eva can be contacted by email evalocilla@hotmail.fr

Our first Winter Tour has finally taken shape… PLEASE book asap, Accommodation is at the Kentish Hotel, Waiuku, which claims to be the oldest continuously licensed Hotel in New Zealand.and boasts its own ghost…. Accommodation is typical old-style hotel, basic but comfortable, priced at $55.00 per person/per night; there is only one ensuite room, so you will need to be fast for that one…
SATURDAY 15 June. Arrive @Waiuku… Check in to The Kentish Hotel, Waiuku. Dinner-TBC/prob. Castaways/Karioitahi Beach.
SUNDAY 16 June. Carpool to Awhitu Lighthouse for Guided Tour @9am. AM Tea/Coffee @local Café. Visit small-scale Sheep Milking operation. Lunch at McNaughtons, view cattle and sand hills farming op/Sub tropical garden visit option.
6 pm. AGM @Conference Room, Kentish Tavern. Dinner @Kentish.
MONDAY 17TH. Murphys’ Bus 8.00am Kentish Carpark. Head “Over the River” to Waikaretu. Visit Kate Broadbent/Nikau Coopworth Stud
Lunch at Nikau Café, Waikeratu
Visit Limestone Downs Station with Rebecca Hickson, Massey University, leader of the Dairy Beef Bull Trials. Bus back to Waiuku-Dinner TBC.
