Question of the Month: Sleep?!

When I talk to people about the parallels between my mothering and my making, my standard quip has become, “They both keep me up at night.” Whilst this is a joke it is also utterly true.

“Are you getting any sleep?” is the question people ask of new mothers. As someone who has never been good at sleeping I experienced those first few months of motherhood as something of a relief – at last, apparently, I had a legitimate, publicly acceptable reason for being tired and having disturbed, difficult nights. That period of legitimacy lasted for roughly six months. After that the nights of a hundred ‘shoulds’ began…..

StageSpace - Pleasance London

Following a class of year 10 students mysteriously taken ill, three mothers from different cultural background wait together in A&E. As this event brings up unresolved issues in their lives, the mothers have to learn from their children.

This play explores themes of motherhood and school gate segregation. It questions the roots of what drives us apart and what fundamentally brings us together.
Motherhouse has recently launched at The White House in Dagenham. Inspired by Christina Ford's residency at the house last year focusing on the experiences of single mothers, The White House has partnered with ProCreate Project to open its doors as the first studio provider in the borough with integrated childcare.

For as little as £30 a day mothers who are artists will have their own studio space, a new network of like minded mothers, and arts educational activities for their children. This will continue on the legacy Christina started on residency at the White House providing new opportunities for artist mums. This opportunity is not limited to mothers in Barking and Dagenham.
