Welcome to Connect

Dear <<Prefered Name>>

We are pleased to announce details in this February edition of our Annual Conference organised in conjunction with our Thomond Region on 13 April, Friday in Limerick. We have had continuing strong engagement with our Thomond Region in preparation for this key event that aims to provide an opportunity for our diverse membership to come together to share ideas and experiences in a conference session. The conference theme is Engineering a Region: Infrastructure, Industry and Innovation. Early bird rates are now available and the speaker line-up to date is outlined below.

We hugely appreciate the active participation of so many of our members who give so enthusiastically of their time and talent to serve the profession. I was delighted to recently meet our GB Region’s committee in London. They provide a focal point for engineers of all disciplines in mainland Britain and actively encourage their continuous professional development through the delivery of a varied programme. Similarly, our North-West Region’s committee which I met on Monday evening provides a focal point for Sligo and Leitrim-based engineers. Our President Dr Kieran Feighan, is looking forward to our Cork Region’s annual dinner tomorrow night, Friday, which will be attended by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Simon Coveney T.D.

Also in Connect you will find information about our exciting festival of engineering, Engineers Week starting on Saturday 24 February. There is still time to get involved. There is an update to our Code of Ethics and information from our Fire and Safety Division about a talk on the new realities of fire safety in tall buildings.

With best wishes

Caroline Spillane

Director General, Engineers Ireland

Our CPD training team - at the heart of our members' training cycle

Ensuring that the standard and competence of our members is world class is important to us as a membership body and is supported by our Engineers Ireland CPD Policy (PDF).

Our CPD training cycle typically starts with the identification of the training needs of our members followed by the design and development of content by a subject-matter expert to meet those needs.

Engineers Ireland’s CPD training team looks to identify the CPD needs of our members through our online Training Needs survey, contact with client companies, our sectoral committees and feedback from training delegates. We then work with subject-matter experts, who may be training consultants, industry experts and often members of Engineers Ireland, to design and develop relevant and engaging content.

These trainers then deliver this content, generally in the format of a seminar, training course, conference or elearning programme at our training facilities in Clyde Road. Some opportunities happen regionally or in-company at an organisation’s own premises. We systematically review all training programmes with a view to continuous improvement and better meeting our members’ needs.

If you have any suggestions for a CPD training course, seminar or evening lecture, or you would like to deliver or participate, please contact cpdtraining@engineersireland.ie.

Update to the Engineers Ireland Code of Ethics

Members are advised that our Code of Ethics, which applies to all categories of membership, has been updated.

The new Code which was approved by our Engineers Ireland Council in December 2017, came into effect on 1 January 2018. It replaces The Standards of Professional Conduct, approved by the Council in 2009.

It is the duty of each member to comply with the provisions of the Code.

The Code is divided into four parts: Relations with colleagues, clients, employers and society in general; environmental and social obligations; maintenance and development of professional conduct and standards and enforcement procedures and disciplinary action.

This update relates to the consideration of complaints. It implements a new assessment system whereby initial consideration of complaints is conducted by the Registrar of Engineers Ireland. Please click here for a copy of the updated Code of Ethics (PDF).

As part of this process, we have updated the complaint form which is also available on our website.

As the statutory and regulatory organisation for professional engineering in Ireland there is a responsibility for Engineers Ireland to have a Code of Ethics for our members.

New Realities of Tall Building Fire Safety

We are pleased in this community section to have a contribution from Tom Leonard, who chairs our Fire and Safety Division.

Next Thursday 15 February, the Engineers Ireland Fire and Safety Division will present on the growth in tall building construction and the rate of change in construction complexity. As more and more people migrate from rural areas into urban habitats, tall buildings will proliferate. Fire engineering needs to keep pace with developments, and old assumptions are not ‘fit for purpose’.

The recent spate of tall building ‘full height’ fires will be analysed within the presentation with guest speaker, Russ Timpson. Socio-economic factors and their impact on how people will live in tall buildings will also be discussed. The talk will be illustrated with several case studies.

Health and safety legislation has had a huge impact on the Irish workplace, and most engineers are involved with health and safety matters on a daily basis, directly or indirectly.

This free event is being hosted by the Fire and Safety Division at Engineers Ireland's offices. The Division provides a means for members to network with their peers and with representatives from industry groups, both through the Committee and through events organised by the Division throughout the year. We welcome new members and we look forward to seeing you on 15 February.

Tom Leonard

Chair of the Fire and Safety Division

If you are a Chair of one of our Regional Branches, Engineering Divisions or Societies, we would be delighted to receive your input to this section. Feel free to email us.
