Feelin' Springy!
It's just now February, but spring is in the air!  What should you be doing now?

1)  Apply pre-emergent.  Look out for the local forsythia to bloom.  They are likely still a week or two out, but right before they do, apply corn gluten meal to your lawn and landscape as a natural pre emergent.
2)  Time to prune fruit trees, perennials, and roses.  It's also time to apply dormant oil.  Applying a dormant oil now will help suffocate dormant insect pests organically.  If you have fungal issues, we also recommend applying copper soap before the tree blooms.  Don't forget to attend one of our many Pruning and Spring Tree Care Classes coming up (schedule below).

3)  Put down grass seed.  These temperatures are warming up to the point that grass will germinate.  Remember, you can't apply both corn gluten meal and grass seed at the same time . . . corn gluten is great for preventing weeds, but it also will keep grass seeds from germinating as well!  After you apply grass seed, cover them with a light compost topdressing to cover, keep moist, and feed the new grass.

4)  Start some seeds!  NOW is the time to start indoors:  Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, lettuce, kale, spinach, chard, arugula and other greens.  It's also time to start your super hot peppers . . . I mean the really hot ones like ghost peppers, and carolina reapers.  In less than a couple of weeks, you can direct sowing root crops like carrots, beets, radishes, turnips and more.  Yay early spring!!  Attend our free seed starting and garden planning classes, happening weekly!
