MCCRC is an all-volunteer community action coalition working in Montgomery County to protect and advance the civil rights and civil liberties of all our neighbors.
We've been going strong for the past year, and we are looking forward to another year of engaging with our neighbors, state and local elected officials, and community leaders. Join us for a strategic conversation about the year ahead.
We are currently organized into five working groups, but we are open to creating more. Our agenda is set by an incredible team of passionate community members, we welcome your involvement and input :
Anti-Islamophobia, chaired by Shala Shamim and Hena Zuberi - challenging county programs that target the Muslim community for increased surveillance and that promote the narrative that Muslim youth are “at-risk” of becoming terrorists
Immigrant Rights, chaired by Carol Schlenker and John Appiah-Duffel - rallying support for county funding for Deportation Defense (Safe Cities Network), the Dream Act (federal legislation to protect the Dreamers), and the Maryland Trust Act.
Surveillance, chaired by Suraj Sazawal recently hosted a digital security workshop and will turn its attention to finding out what surveillance tools the MoCo police are using and tracking bills related to surveillance in Annapolis
Police Accountability has focused on the school to prison pipeline, and lobbying for police reform and accountability in Annapolis
Bystander Intervention Training, chaired by Kit Bonson has trained over 2,000 people on techniques to use to intervene when you see bullying and hate. The next workshop will be co-hosted by Maryland CAIR on February 17
