Newsletter #2
From the Creative Mind of Shari Pratt (and Creative Kaos)

Why "and Creative Kaos"?

In 2006, after teaching for a few decades in the public system, I decided to open an Art School named "Creative Kaos School of Art and Imagineering". Originally I offered classes for ages 3-adult as well as in-school fieldtrips and Pro D days for teachers. Creative Kaos then evolved to include lectures and workshops from GOLDEN ARTIST COLORS as I was asked several years ago to become the Working Artist for the Province of British Columbia.
Skipping ahead to 2018: This year, I will be moving to a much larger studio in 1000 Parker St, Vancouver where I will be offering additional classes and workshops (see below). I will still be offering classes in Maple Ridge as well as for Golden Artist Colors. Last year I retired myself from teaching children (except for the occasional i
n-school fieldtrips and Pro D days for teachers) so that I could spend more time in my studio painting.

A BIG Thank you for your continued support! You have automatically been entered to win a set of GOLDEN Heavy Body Acrylics because I appreciate your support so far and for signing up to receive my Newsletters. Winner will be notified in my next issue. Winner from issue #1 is Camilla Reed...yaa!!!

Creating HARD, SOFT, and LOST EDGES
In nature, there are almost no hard edges or sharp lines. Edge control is created by the artist by pushing and pulling the contrast between the edges of the natural objects allowing the shapes to become important or subtle. Edges can be distinct or indistinct.
A distinct edge is one that is obvious, a sharp or hard edge. A hard edge can allow the viewer to notice the center of interest or emphasis point in a painting. Hard edges create visual tension and tend to pop forward. Set against soft edges and the hard edge dominates.
A soft edge is painted so that it disappears or fades into the background.Soft edges create a sense of perspective and depth in your work. A soft edges allows the object to feel as if it is moving away into the distance.
     Lost edges fuse
positive shapes with negative spaces. One might expect to see just a hint of an edge that disappears and bleeds into the background. Lost edges can be the most beautiful parts of a painting.

Testimonials by Creative Kaos Students

I have been studying with Shari Pratt for 7 years and am always amazed by her incredible depth of knowledge and keen artistic eye.  She is able to take any level of student from beginner to advanced and not only inspire them but also enhance their painting skills to new levels. Shari ensures that every student receives individual attention and their unique artistic styles are encouraged from abstract to realist.  The class is a fun social evening where everyone is welcomed and every student's input is valued.
-Tracy Quincy-

Shari is encouraging and honest.  She always looks to hone your skills in the style that is uniquely yours,  not hers.  I always feel that no matter what I have difficulty with, Shari always finds a gentle and kind way to help me discover the next step.  She is humorous and knowledgeable.  After a number of years working on my skills there is always more to learn and Shari is always there to assist.
