I Am Garfield Heights Because…

Hello Neighbors,

I am Anne Davis, one of the GHNA co-chairs this year, along with my friend and neighbor, Lisa Mann. I’m looking back on all we collectively have done as a neighborhood and thinking forward to all we can do together in the year to come. We are so very grateful to Jura Slattery for her years as GHNA chair. We are certainly delighted she will remain an active board member and Vice Chair. Thank you Jura!

In thinking about what to write to you, dear neighbors, in my first article as Co-Chair, I was reminded of my son’s college application essays. During the college admission process, prospective students are often asked to write an essay that states what would make them an integral part of that specific college community. The prompt for the essay is often “I am (insert name of college) because…” and I began to think about all of you, the people who are the fabric of Garfield Heights, and how each one of you might complete that sentence.

We all come from somewhere, if not a different place, a different time. Some of us were born in Garfield Heights. Others grew up in another part of Pasadena or Southern California. Still others relocated here from other states or countries. We all have our own stories that have brought us to this neighborhood community. Our personal histories are part of what makes our community so rich. I look forward to hearing more about you, past, present, and future.

Onward!

–Anne Davis
GHNA Co-Chair, 2018

Pasadena Black History Parade and Festival

Saturday – February 17 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Now in its 36th year, this community event honors the African American history, heritage and achievements. The festivities begin at 10 a.m. when the parade commences at Altadena’s Charles White Park (77 Mountain View St.) and proceeds south along on Fair Oaks Ave. until reaching Jackie Robinson Park. Both parks are significant locations for this event: Charles White Park is named for the acclaimed African-American artist, while Jackie Robinson Park commemorates the trail-blazing athlete.

The Black History Festival will take place on Hammond Street and the north side of Robinson Park from noon-4:30 p.m. There will be fun activities for kids, live music, vendors, displays and food for purchase.  We encourage our residents to take some time to stroll over to Fair Oaks, cheer on the parade participants, and enjoy the festival.  Please keep in mind that there will be some street closures at intersections crossing Fair Oaks Avenue, and plan accordingly for your travel in through neighborhood during the parade hours that day.

Our gift to you – a free Emergency Kit!

Earthquake Preparedness

We can't say it enough! We live on potentially shaky ground, so making a plan now is our best strategy for ourselves, our families and our community.

The good news is that the Pasadena Fire Department has provided great online resources using the system known as Map Your Neighborhood, with guidelines to help neighborhoods plan, prepare and practice how to be self-sufficient in the event of a major disaster.

You can learn more about this program at   https://ww5.cityofpasadena.net/fire/map-your-neighborhood/

If you are interested in being a Block Captain or have questions, please email info@garfieldheights.org (attn: Anne)

Sidewalk Repairs

Do you have sidewalks that look like this? Did you know that, as a homeowner, you are responsible for permanent repairs to the sidewalks in front of your home? Did you also know that you can request a sidewalk 'patch' that may not look as beautiful as a permanent repair, but it will protect the people walking in front of your house and, at the same time, may protect you from liability?

According to this Pasadena website: https://ww5.cityofpasadena.net/public-works/street-maintenance-waste-management/streets-sidewalks/sidewalks/ you can apply for the sidewalk reimbursement program should you wish to pursue a permanent repair. Residents may also submit requests for asphalt maintenance patches by contacting the Citizen Service Center through the City’s app, calling 626-744-7311.

Let's look out for each other and proactively submit sidewalk repairs on the Pasadena Citizen Service Center app!

It's Flu Season - Take Care of YOU!

As most of you know, it's a particularly bad flu season this year. We care about you and your family. Don't forget to eat well, get your sleep, drink plenty of water and wash your hands often.

In the physician's office at my workplace, this poster was displayed and I thought it was a helpful way to explain the difference between a cold/flu.

Stay healthy Garfield Heights!!

GHNA Book Club

The Book Club is meeting on Friday, February 23 at 7:30pm to discuss Peter Moskowitz's book How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality and the Fight for the Neighborhood. Contact Anne at annevdavis@gmail.com to RSVP and get the details. If you are having trouble finding the book, please let me know. (We hear there's a wait list at the library!)

The GHNA Book Club was started in 2017 to build a deeper connection to our Pasadena history, our community and to each other, making the mission of the GHNA book club unique to other clubs. We want to begin a thoughtful discussion about our current and future community.

Hope you can join us!

MILLS ACT WORKSHOP

Tickets : PH Member Free | Non-Member $10 donation requested at the door

Landmark Districts such as Garfield Heights are historic neighborhoods designated at the local level and protected by special zoning laws. Designated properties are typically eligible for grants or tax incentives for rehabilitation projects through programs like the Mills Act. How do you know if your property is eligible? What is the application process? These questions and more will be addressed by our staff, speakers from the City Planning Department, and local citizens participating in each of the programs.

Garfield Heights has several homeowners who have taken advantage of this property tax incentive program, who would be willing to help guide you through the application process.  Take advantage of this workshop to learn more about the Mills Act program.
