North Kelvin Community Council News

February 2018

Hello!

This one has the correct date! Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 6th February, 6.30pm, at the usual place, St Charles' Church Hall, 1 Kelvinside Gardens, G20 6BG. Our meetings are open to all residents.

One of the items on the agenda is parking: if you have a view, please come along if you can. This is particularly important in the light of the recent incident on Doune Gardens when parked cars prevented a fire engine reaching an abandoned car that had been set on fire. Fortunately the firefighters were able to extend a hose sufficiently and the fire was extinguished, not before the tank had exploded. The car was later removed. The lack of access to the fire engine is extremely concerning.

Also on the crime front, we have heard more reports of young bikers vandalising cars in the area. Please report any incidents you notice to the police.

Phase 2 of Glasgow City Council's city-wide Bin Replacement Programme is set for the Hillhead area between April 2018 and March 2019. The BRP aims to provide larger replacement general waste and recycling wheelie bins, information on how to recycle properly and a better cleansing service. The community benefits are intended to be:

  • Larger bins and cleaner backcourts
  • Increased recycling opportunities
  • Reduced pest control issues
  • Responsive cleansing services
  • Safe play areas for children
  • Better and cleaner environment

Glasgow NW Citizens Advice & Woodlands Community Food Development Project have produced leaflets on local food banks, including a map of food distribution points and list of locations and opening times. The leaflets can be downloaded from their website.

Finally, the Maryhill Song Book has been produced by Maryhill Burgh Halls and can be purchased online. It contains music sheets of 7 original melodies composed by Maeve Mackinnon and Maryhill Heritage Choir with 19th century poetry as the lyrics, and includes a historical narrative for each song.
