ASCN's 3rd Steering Committee Meeting

ASCN's 3rd Steering Committee Meeting took place January 23-24, 2018, in Washington D.C. This meeting was attended by ASCN Hub members, the Steering Committee, and Working Group leaders. ASCN Hub members offered a brief review of the last year’s activities, which are summarized in the ASCN Annual Report. Working group leaders presented group updates and plans for 2018.  Finally, ASCN Hub leaders presented three strategic foci for 2018, and invited steering committee members to choose an area they would like to contribute to by participating in a subcommittee. The following strategic objectives for ASCN work emerged during the steering committee meeting:

Objective 1: Seek to establish the “niche” for the network
Objective 2: Plan for the first ASCN conference on Transforming Institutions
Objective 3: Develop effective working group structure
Objective 4: Increase the visibility of the working groups and the network
Objective 5: Focus on processes and evaluate what is working and what needs to change

Objectives 1 and 2 have been identified by the ASCN hub leadership as the top priorities to be addressed over the next few months.

We are very excited to start planning for the first ASCN Conference. If you are interested in joining the conference program committee, please email the ASCN team at cricpe-ascn@wmich.edu by February 26.  The program committee membership will be finalized by March 8.
ASCN Systemic Change Institute (SCI)

Workshop Dates and Location
Dates: July 18-20, 2018
Location: Philadelphia, PA
The workshop will begin in late afternoon on July 18, 2018, and end by 4 pm on July 20, 2018.

Institute Description
The Institute is designed to support campus change agents in using institutional change strategies to advance STEM change projects to greater scale and sustainability. Campus teams will bring existing projects, envisioned or started, that they need help bringing to scale or longer-term sustainability. Campus teams may be struggling with leadership turnover, lack of resources or infrastructure, team dynamics, shifting project goals and priorities, or other challenges. Institute participants will learn about the national context and drivers for change, theories and frameworks of change and the logistics of managing change projects to advance them to scale and sustainability. The Systemic Change Institute is a year-long commitment from ASCN to support teams, and a commitment by teams to work with mentors toward achieving project goals. Institute participants will be mentored throughout the year by STEM leaders, researchers, and change agents who have experience with reform projects. The institute kicks off with a two-day workshop that takes place in Philadelphia, July 18 - 20, 2018. Virtual progress meetings will also be scheduled throughout the following year, and mentors will make one site visit to each team's institution.

Institute Applications
Applications will be accepted online until March 31, 2018. Institute tuition of $3500 covers workshop costs for up to 3 team members (programming, access to mentors, group meals, and 3 nights lodging) as well as follow-up activities. Additional team members (up to 2) can attend for an additional cost of $1000 each. Tuition does not cover travel expenses to Philadelphia. A small number of need-based tuition and travel scholarships are available.

ASCN Webinar: Developing and Sustaining Effective Partnerships to Advance Change in STEM Higher Education

The next ASCN Webinar is February 21,
at 9:30 am PT | 10:30 am MT | 11:30 am CT | 12:30 pm ET
Register here by February 19.

This webinar features the following presenters:
  • Marilyn Amey, Mildred B. Erickson Endowed Chair and Professor, Department of Educational Administration, Michigan State University
  • Sarah Rodriguez, Assistant Professor, School of Education, Iowa State University
  • Lucas Hill, Assistant Researcher, Wisconsin Center for Education Research, University of Wisconsin - Madison
Webinar Abstract: Successful STEM projects, especially those aiming to influence cultural and structural changes, involve working across organizational levels (e.g., disciplines, departments, colleges, institutions). Funders and administrative directives encourage collaborative efforts but typically focus more on reform mission of the collaborative rather than the functional developmental components. Experience clearly shows there is more to creating and sustaining effective educational partnerships. First, using a partnership development model, this session will help participants identify challenges to partnership development and strategies to address them. Then, lessons learned will be shared from experiences connecting with colleagues across campus and suggestions offered on how to utilize a wide-range of team expertise in campus partnerships/teams. Participants interactively will explore practical steps that can help overcome challenges working in interdisciplinary teams. Next, this session will offer a look at research findings and insights from two multi-institutional collaborations, the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), a network of 41 universities focused on preparing future faculty, and CIRTL's NSF INCLUDES launch pilot. Participants will learn what are the key activities and characteristics of individuals who can successfully span the boundary between their organization and a larger partnership collective in service to local and national reform goals.
