Hope you had a wonderful new year and some time to reflect a bit on priorities for 2018. Isn't it interesting how we seem to do this every year at this time. Why is that? Must be some sort of renewal ritual. Rather than make resolutions I make a list of what I would like to accomplish in the forthcoming year and if it doesn't get done it's usually because it wasn't as necessary as I first deemed it. Truth is, I seem to modify the list throughout the year. This year I'm planning on doing more mixed media work on canvas.
I'm continuing the (almost) daily routine of making small paintings using a Pilot Precise V5 Rolling Ball black ink pen in conjunction with Chinese white, gouache and transparent watercolor. Here is a sampling. And by the way I'm selling these small paintings for $50 each unframed and that includes shipping in the continental United States. They're roughly 8 X 8 inches square on a 12 X 9 inch sheet out of a Canson Mixed Media Sketchbook, signed and dated right below the square. You can find more on my website. They're the "Colored Drawings". Contact me if you see one or some you can't live without. Right now availability is good but sales are picking up and you can't beat this price.

Alabama Art Colony
This year in October I will be one of three instructors at the Sarah Carlisle Towery Alabama Art Colony at Children's Harbor on Lake Martin. It's going to be a whole bunch of fun. "Children’s Harbor is a picture-perfect place for painters. Reminiscent of a New England seaside village, this inspiring setting welcomes visitors with its signature wooden lighthouse and charming Early-American style church known as Children’s Chapel. The grounds only get better from there!
Located on beautiful Lake Martin, 15 miles south of Alexander City, Alabama, on Highway 63, Children’s Harbor has long been home to the Art Colony workshops. The wooded campus features large, rustic-style lodges where artists gather to set up the studio spaces they will use throughout their stay. These spacious venues let artists spread out easels and supplies and give instructors plenty of room for class demonstrations. A major bonus is that inspiring views of the lake and woods are everywhere!
Just a stroll away from the studio venues are the dining and lodging facilities. Artists stay in modern, air-conditioned cabins with decks overlooking the lake. Meals are served for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the nearby Harbor Lodge Conference Center, where evenings are highlighted by special activities and lively conversation among artists and instructors."
My workshops are designed to help students paint intuitively, starting with no preconceived notion or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, gesso and acrylic. There will be regular comments and evaluation of work in progress concerning relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is a painting which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.
