Tackling Modern Slavery
The Local Government Association is encouraging the public to be more aware of Modern Slavery in the UK.  The report says that members of the public need to become ‘the first line of defence’ against this, and need to be aware of the potential to come across people working in slavery in their everyday lives.

There has been a dramatic increase in the numbers of people referred as potential victims over the summer, 1,322 between July and September 2017, against 901 in the same period in 2016. This is a rise of 47%, and reflects the estimated numbers of victims of slavery in the UK – between 10,000 and 30,000.

Members of the public who suspect that modern slavery may be happening in their local area are urged to contact the police or local authority, who have a duty to report it to the National Referral Mechanism, the body responsible for taking care of potential victims of modern slavery.

You can read the full article from the Local Government Association on their website, where the Council Guide can also be downloaded.
BAME Mental Health
Penreath would like to inform, or remind you about the Community Development Worker service for Black Asian & Minority Ethnic (BAME) mental health needs in Cornwall.  They provide support to any person from a BAME background experiencing mental health difficulties or emotional distress.  Their service specification definition of BAME would be any person 18+ who would not declare themselves either White British, or White Cornish on a census form.  They are able to work alongside other teams, service providers, and agencies.  They offer a range of services for individuals, as well as support and training for service providers.
