Pastors Pen Reflection

“Healing begins where the wound was made.”
-Alice Walker
(The Way Forward Is with a Broken Heart)

 Dear <<Name>>
This week I would like to point you to Ella Baker. Ella was a dedicated civil rights leader and activist. She worked with the NAACP, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee among other organizations. Spurred on by her grandmother’s tales of slave master cruelty, Ella spent her life fighting for equal rights while single-handedly taking care of her niece.

She grew up in North Carolina and graduated from college there, and worked for most of her life based in New York City.  She was a largely behind-the-scenes organizer whose career spanned more than five decades. She worked alongside some of the most famous civil rights leaders of the 20th century, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thurgood Marshall, A. Philip Randolph, and Martin Luther King Jr. She also mentored many emerging activists, such as Diane Nash, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa Parks, and Bob Moses. * Wikipedia

Baker criticized professionalized, charismatic leadership; she promoted grassroots organizing, radical democracy, and the ability of the oppressed to understand their worlds and advocate for themselves. She has been ranked as "One of the most important African American leaders of the twentieth century and perhaps the most influential woman in the Civil Rights Movement," Ella is known for her critiques not only of racism within American culture, but also the sexism and classism within the Civil Rights Movement.

A documentary chronicled her life story in 1981 entitled ‘Fundi: The Story of Ella Baker’. ‘Fundi’ was her nickname, which came from the Swahili word for a person who passes down her craft to the next generation. Ella definitely left an impressive legacy behind for us to be grateful for. Ella was a powerful woman who shared her life to make change and to help others see that change was needed. You can read more about her and her biography at the link below.

I pray that we too can use or gifts and talents for positive change.
Blessing
