Welcome 2018!

Welcome to our latest newsletter, the second this school year, in which we hope to have helped keep you updated on our latest news. And we've got something really big coming soon, on March 24th actually ... so keep reading!

Our Christmas Celebrations:
December 21st was the date we were all looking forward to! Many of our children had been practicing for months during every break time and even came to school early to work on their routines. The results were definitely worth the effort. Some of the kids had, together with their teacher, put together a drama sketch, while others had dance performances. We were also entertained by several groups who sang, with the highlight being a presentation by them of all the different countries represented at African Hope. It is unbelievable how much variety there is in clothing, style and customs between different African nations (picture below). After closing this beautiful morning, all the students received a gift bag for Christmas.
Healthcare projects:
In November and December we did a couple of healthcare trainings. All the kindergarten classes as well as grades 1-3 got a lesson on tooth brushing, and each student was provided with their very own toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste.
Our volunteer nurse taught, together with another volunteer who came to class dressed up as a toothpaste tube, which definitely made it a lot of fun for the children. It certainly drew their attention, and hopefully the fun memory will help them remember to brush.
After the tooth brushing the whole school joined together for a lesson in general healthcare, eg the importance of regular hand washing to prevent germs from spreading. With the help of glitter in the hand sanitizer container it brought the point across very well (in a fun way) how germs spread.
Thanks to a generous donation, all our 482 students recently had their eyes tested. Fifty-five of those received glasses.
They had the opportunity to choose their own frames and while some are delighted, others are still trying to get used to wearing glasses.
Volunteers helping:
Our dedicated teachers and also the many volunteers that come in regularly continue to make our learning center a great place to study. Some volunteers come in 4 days a week for 2 hours per day to meet with KG2 to grade 4 learners for guided reading, while others cover for or assist our teachers in classes like music, art and health education. Each one of them adds a contribution to the school for the benefit of the children and also for our teachers, as they offer new ideas, support and encouragement to the team.
