2018 a year of innovation for Suncare

2018 is already well underway and I’m pleased to say that Suncare has started the new year as it ended the last, growing at a rapid pace. The fantastic news is that we are on track financially and have seen a record increase in customers under our care. Rapid growth in any organisation or sector comes with its challenges and Suncare is no different. Our focus over the last quarter has been on our people, processes and platforms to ensure that our customers - existing and new - receive the very best experience that we can offer. 2018 will be a year of innovation as we continue our journey towards the seamless integration of digital technology. While we continue to implement technology solutions to simplify and streamline our back end operations, we are looking forward to the development of technology to enable and empower our real time, intuitive care model. There has never been a more exciting time in the community care sector and we are determined to be at the forefront of its development. I look forward to sharing more with you in the future.

My Active and Healthy Ageing: frailty study

Suncare is participating in a groundbreaking study which aims to identify older adults at risk of developing frailty and assess the capacity of different interventions to reduce the risk of developing frailty. The multi-national study is being conducted by Associate Professor Mathew Summers at the Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience - Thompson Institute.
Older adults with frailty are at increased risk of falls, which leads to a loss of independence and may contribute to increased need for residential care. The My Active and Healthy Ageing study is designed to develop and test a new computer-based platform to detect risk markers for frailty and to intervene to prevent the development of clinical frailty.
If you or anyone you know is interested in participating in the study, please contact Matthew McClymont (Ph: 0403 470 148 or matthew.m@suncare.org.au). There is much value for participants to be part of this trial and we encourage people to get involved.

Suncare farewells Richard Johnson

After more than four years at Suncare, Chief Operations Manager Richard Johnson bid farewell this month and looks forward to the new pathways of the future. As the former Regional Director of Uniting Care in Central Queensland, Richard always dreamed of moving to the Sunshine Coast, so when a position was advertised in Birtinya, Richard’s skills and experience made him the ideal candidate. During his time with Suncare, Richard had many proud moments - the most memorable being a conversation he overheard about an experience with a Support Worker. The conversation went on to say how exceptional the Suncare worker had been, a quality of care that Suncare Support Workers pride themselves on. While living on the Sunshine Coast, Richard also made the most of the lifestyle, spending time enjoying nature and surfing. Suncare wishes him all the best in his endeavours.

Celebrity Pro Am to raise funds for carers

If you know anyone who is a golf fanatic or would be happy to help a great charitable cause, The Carers Foundation Australia has a few tables left at its Celebrity Pro Am on the Gold Coast on 14-15 March 2018. This event will raise much needed funds to assist with continuing programs for carers.

Carer Gateway offers financial guidance

If you care for a family member or a friend, you may experience financial difficulties as you juggle your time between work and caring, or may find you are unable to work if the person you care for requires a lot of assistance. The Carer Gateway provides an excellent guide on the types of carer payments available, including special schemes if you are a veteran or an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Have your say: Action Plan survey

The Aged Care Sector Committee Diversity Sub-group is developing an action plan to address the specific barriers and challenges faced by older people from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups when accessing aged care. They now invite people to have their say via their online consumer surveys which close on 15 March 2018.

Online survey researches family carers

Carers Queensland and Queensland University of Technology have developed a comprehensive survey to gauge both the positive and negative impacts of caring for someone. The results of this anonymous survey will provide valuable research about family carers living in Australia.
