Busselton, Western Australia, the venue of the Cherub Nationals is one of the world’s finest sailing locations. The waters are crystal clear. Two kilometres offshore near the end of the famous Busselton Jetty, you can see the bottom six metres below as you sail. The waters are flat in nearly all breeze directions and the well managed clubhouse and rigging areas are excellent. Geographe Bay Yacht Club were fabulous hosts, well organised, friendly and very accommodating.
The Cherub regatta had a good range of wind conditions form light 10kt northerlies through to solid 18kt south westerlies. The Cherub Nationals racing was very tight right across the 32 boat fleet. Four Lane Cove Cherubs were part of a contingent of 20 NSW boats that wee joined by 11 Western Australians and one boat from the Northern Territory.
Most of the top places went to NSW boats with Trevor Fay and Nigel Blatchford from Belmont willing the series from former Lane Cove Junior and the defending Champion Alison Chapman who sailed with Andrew Stephenson from Drummoyne. Another former champion Kris Fay from Belmont sailing with James Walters was third. The Junior Trophy went to Jarrod Turner form Belmont and the Cadet Trophy to Jacqueline Harding from Perth.
