What is happening in Bolivia?
January 2018

Dear Friends & Partners;

Christmas and the New Year have come and gone, and we praise God for a great 2017! One of the things we are most grateful for is arriving in Bolivia a year earlier than we expected when we started deputation in 2015. We are also grateful to the Lord for allowing us to witness His hand on our work. A year ago, we never imagined that we’d be involved in so many different ministries in such a short period of time. We were faced with relocating to Bolivia, Immigration, finding a house, setting the house up, and a myriad of other things that needed to be done just to live in the country! The house we rented needed a lot of work, and a friend once said “Jeff, if you guys don’t do anything but get your house in order the first six months, you will be doing well”! We are grateful that God had other plans in store for us, and we praise Him for what he has done in our lives and work. Here is a short review of what happened in 2017:
  • Arrived in Bolivia on January 20th.
  • Immediately, we rented and began repairs on our Home upon arrival in Tarija.
  • Initiated Immigration paperwork in February. A process that took several months.
  • Reconnected with Iglesia Bautista Biblica La Luz in March. We started this church in 2003 and are pleased to help them move forward once again.
  • Established and organized a thriving Women’s Ministry in June.
  • Began construction on a new Building in June. Though the structure is up and we are using it; this is a work still in progress.
  • Launched two new Children’s Ministry Clubs in July.
  • Launched a New Church Work in October in a community called Santiago with Pastor Mario Flores and his family.
  • Launched a Children’s Ministry Club in October in the Santiago community.
  • The greatest thing that happened is that more than 175 people made professions of faith!
We’ve also had a good start to 2018! A late project in 2017 for us was providing scholarships to camp for unsaved and unchurched young people. It is Summer in Bolivia, and Camp was the first week of January. With the help of some of our supporting Churches, we were able to provide scholarships for 20 young people to attend camp. It was a great blessing when 16 of them made a profession of faith in Christ. We cannot think of a better project to end the old year with and begin the new! Though we have been in the States for medical check-ups (more on that in a moment); before we left we planned and organized an adult leadership training class for people in our church. That ministry began this past Sunday evening with 20 people in attendance! That is a great start!

Overall, things in the work continue to move forward at a steady pace, and we are pleased with the progress that we are seeing. We now have our main church that we work with, a new church that we are helping establish, and three Children’s Clubs running. In addition to the daily work associated with these ministries, there are many other events and activities to help them flourish. Please pray for continued growth through evangelism and discipleship in each of these endeavors.

We are pleased to report that all has gone well on our medical appointments! There is a total of 10 appointments scheduled from the end of December until the end of January with all but 2 of those being completed! Sandra had to transfer to a new Oncologist due to Healthcare Coverage requirements. We were somewhat concerned about that but are very pleased with the new attending physician. We have been able to move all of our medical checkups to the same month in the calendar year going forward. This is a huge blessing as it will allow us to be more efficient with our time in the States and in Bolivia. One of the concerns we had coming in was Jeff’s knee. (You might remember that he hurt it pretty badly in June.) However, he got very sick within 48 hours of returning to the States and was able to rest his knee for 2 weeks. By the time the Doctors visit with the specialist came around, the pain was gone! The damage is still evident on examination, but at this point it has been treated with a shot and will be followed up with as needed. We count this as an answer to prayer as our primary care provider was concerned that surgery was going to be the solution to this problem. Additionally, our annual physicals were good, and it looks like we’ll live another year!

One of the challenges in Bolivia has been a strike among doctors and medical professionals that lasted a couple of months. During the strike, emergency services were available, but not much more than that. Because of things like this, we are grateful to have excellent healthcare available to us in the States that we can take care of in a timely manner. We have been working in Bolivia while at the same time coordinating with our healthcare providers in the States to get all of our annual medical requirements on schedule to be taken care of in the same month. It has been difficult and time consuming. We want you to know that we appreciate your faithfulness to us and your prayers for us as we have worked through this process.

An added blessing while we are in the States is that we will be able to attend our son’s (Taylor) graduation from Officer Candidate School with the US Navy. He has been an enlisted service member for 6 years and was recently selected to become an Officer. His promotion will be official after he finishes this school. Our family has a very strong military and Navy heritage, and we are very pleased for him and proud of his accomplishments.

In just a few short weeks, we will be returning to Bolivia. We are chomping at the bit to get there! We hear frequently from the people in our ministry and yearn to be back among them. Please pray for them as well as us as we take care of the many details we have ahead of us to travel and get home to Bolivia. We love and appreciate you and are grateful for your interest in our lives and work. May the Lord Richly bless you as you serve Him!

Prayer Requests:
  1. Please pray for a safe return to Bolivia.
  2. Pray for wisdom as we manage our ministries.
  3. Please pray for the new work in Barrio Santiago.
  4. As our work expands, we need additional support. Please pray that the Lord will open new avenues of partnership for our ministry.
  5. Please praise the Lord with us for the Good medical reports!
We love you, and we remain your hands and feet on the ground in Bolivia!
