The Scot Knot - February 2018

Major Declaration and Meeting with Advisors

Students declare majorsOn March 1, first-year students will attend the annual Major Declaration Fair to formally choose a major and transition from their first-year advisor to an academic advisor in their major. This is a culmination of the exploration in their First-Year Seminar and other courses through the fall and into the spring term. “Still Deciding” is a perfectly acceptable option for students wishing to continue exploration with the first-year advisor. Students who have questions about Major Declaration should contact their First-Year Seminar advisors.

All students will be working with their academic advisors in March or early April to schedule courses for the upcoming academic year – summer, fall and spring. Students and advisors will also be updating degree plans and discussing exciting opportunities related to their MC academic experience, such as internships or study abroad. Each student will receive an email from the Registrar’s Office with instructions and the date and time his or her registration window opens. Student questions about registration should be directed to the Registrar’s Office at 865.981.8212, and students who have questions about advising should contact their academic advisors.

For general questions about these topics, please contact Dr. Sharon May, associate professor of economics and director of academic advising, at 865.981.8343 or by email.

Student Affairs: Residence Hall Room Selection

Student in residence hall roomAll students wishing to go through the housing selection process will need to have their $100 housing deposit paid to the Business Office by MARCH 28. Students may then begin forming their ideal roommate groups. We advise they also create contingency plans in the event they do not get the room type they hope (i.e. if they are not selected for a 6-person apartment, how will they divide their group?). Those who are interested in living with a new transfer or international student may apply in our office. Based on variables decided upon by the Student Government Association, groups are assigned point values that help in deciding order of lottery and selection.

Students will need to attend both the lottery and selection times for their desired room type (6-person rooms lottery: 3/26, selection: 3/27, 4-person room lottery: 3/28, selection: 3/29, single room lottery: 4/2, selection: 4/3, triple room lottery: 4/4, selection: 4/5, quad lottery: 4/9, selection: 4/10, double room lottery: 4/11, selection: 4/12). Housing Selection Informational sessions will be offered to students on March 12, 13 and 14.

Peer Mentors

Student Affairs: Peer Mentors

Do you remember the peer mentors you met at Great Beginnings? Can you see your student performing in this very important role for new students and families? If so, encourage your student to apply to be a peer mentor for the 2018-2019 school year! Applications will be available through the Today@MC email on Feb. 12 and must be submitted by Feb. 21. Students will engage in a thorough interview process, and 25 students will be selected to serve.

Residence Life staff

Student Affairs: Leadership Opportunities

Ambassador, Peer Mentor and Resident Assistant selections take place during February and March. There are many other opportunities for students through student organizations, and many of them select officers in March and April. Encourage your student to look for new opportunities to engage in leadership opportunities on campus. Students can stay in the loop by reading the Today@MC email messages each day!

Center for Campus Ministry: Bonner Scholars Requirements

Bonner Scholars groupAll Bonner Scholars are required to complete two full-time summers of service – 280 hours of service in a not-for-profit agency serving people in need. Most students do these summers after their first and second year of college. Students may be paid for their summer of service, so many of our students serve as camp counselors, work in summer recreation/tutoring programs, or work in other leadership capacities. Bonner Scholars also have funding available to them for summer support – for living and travel expenses related to their summers of service. Students are in the process of submitting budgets to allow them to access these funds before they leave for the summer. Finally, students who complete their summer of service receive a stipend, which is added to their Bonner Scholarship, so they gain professional experience, make a difference in our community, and gain funds for school. Not a bad summer!

Incoming first-year students are applying for faith and learning and service scholarships for next year. First-year scholarship deadlines are Feb. 1 and are processed online, through the Admissions Office. Bradford Scholarships are available for upper-level students. Students who are interested in literacy tutoring in exchange for scholarship support should pay attention to announcements – for an informational meeting around the first of March and applications due shortly after Spring Break.

Student Affairs: Spring Break Residence Hall Closures

Beeson VillageResidence halls close for Spring Break on Fri., March 16 at 9 p.m. Residents found in their residence halls after the posted deadlines may be charged with an improper check-out fee or face disciplinary action(s). Residents’ ID cards are turned off during breaks to limit access to the halls during those times. Students are NOT expected to turn in their key during this break.

Residents may request to stay during Spring Break by submitting a Break Stay Request form through the Residence Life webpage. Requests must be submitted no later than March 2 at noon – late requests may incur a $50 processing charge. Depending on the rationale provided by the student, the request may be either permitted or denied – submitting a request does not guarantee a student will be allowed to stay during a break. Students, if allowed to stay during a break, may also incur a $15/day charge for this stay, which will be added to the student’s bill. During breaks, through the process of submitting a break request form, students agree to the break policies: no alcohol allowed in the residence halls (regardless of age); no visitors in the residence halls (who are not also approved to be present during the break); and any violations of break, College or residence hall policies may cause the student to be removed from break housing immediately.

Commencement 2018: Grad Event

Students at CommencementFor parents of graduating seniors, the big day is quickly approaching. You can find information on the MC website, and as the event gets closer, the information will continue to be updated.

A “Grad Event” will be taking place in the Bartlett Atrium in front of the Maryville College Bookstore on Thurs., March 15 from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. and on Fri., March 16 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Representatives from Jostens will be available to help seniors order class rings and graduation announcements. Caps and gowns will also be available for purchase, and the Bookstore will continue to have them available until Commencement. Though this will be the only time that the Jostens representatives will be on campus, they will also provide an online order option.
