Gordon Neighbourhood House evaluates the impact of our work together using a variety of methods.

Here is a snapshot of some of the fun we had in December 2017:

“Thank you a hundred times for all your caring – the many friends and the food that keeps me alive.
A home away from home.”

—Community Lunch participant

The Seniors in Action program animated 10 activities and we served 308 lunches.

95% of people surveyed reported that they feel an increase in community belonging as a result of attending our programs.

Here’s a look at what we did in 2017:

AGM on January 30th

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Gordon Neighbourhood House's Annual General Meeting (AGM). A special thanks to our inspiring Keynote Speaker, Jessica Hannon who works as the Executive Director of Megaphone. We look forward to working with her and Megaphone more in the future.

Congratulations to our 8 elected Board members!

"We see poverty as a moral failing, and doing something about it as a waste of taxpayer money. The human impacts of poverty are crushing, but if we don’t see the humanity in poverty, then this is where we are."

—Jessica Hannon

Donna Simpson Awards

Congratulations to Isabel Ashton and Brendan David Bailey, the recipients of this year's Donna Simpson Community Champion Award.

The Donna Simpson Award is awarded to individuals who show outstanding service to the community and Gordon Neighbourhood House, just as Donna Simpson did when she was a dedicated volunteer and created the Attic Thrift Store.

Isabel

Isabel has worked at GNH for 4 years with children, families, and youth. Her devotion and dedication to GNH is invaluable; she has been here from open to close on many many nights and is always there to help her fellow staff when needed. Isabel's strong social justice compass has been a strong force in ensuring that GNH remains an open and accessible place for everyone. Thank you for everything you do for GNH and the community, Isabel!

Brendan

Brendan began volunteering with GNH more that 3 years ago when he approached us about an innovative program he co-designed which aimed to engage residents and foster relationships between tenants of a newly constructed multi-family building. Since then, Brendan has been a limitless supply of creative ideas, passion and dedication with our Young Ideas group. Brendan brings creativity and a strong work ethic to the team and is always cheerful and willing to assist with any task. Thank you for all you do in our community, Brendan!

Farewell Chantille

Chantille, our Senior Director, has provided excellent leadership over the past year. She has now left us to move into a more policy-focused role. Prior to this, she helped to develop our food programs as Director of Community Food Initiatives.
We have started the search for a community-focused Executive Director to take Gordon Neighbourhood House into an expanded community role.

Allen Smith,
Transitional Executive Director

Community Volunteer Income Tax Program

Need a hand?

If you need help to prepare your 2017 income tax and benefit return, volunteers may be able to complete your return for you!

The CVITP (Community Volunteers Income Tax Program) helps eligible taxpayers who have a modest income and a simple tax situation. Volunteers are not employees or volunteers of the Canada Revenue Agency. Remember to bring all your tax slips and form with you.

Modest income is based on the number of persons in your family, your total family income should be less than:

One person - $30,000

Two persons - $40,000

Three persons - $42,500

Simple tax situation

In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from these sources:

  • Employment
  • Pension
  • Benefit or support payments
  • RRSP
  • Scholarships or grants
  • Interest (under $1,000)

Returns not eligible for the CVITP

  • Volunteers do not complete returns for individuals who:
  • Are self-employed or have employment expenses
  • Have business or rental income and expenses
  • Have capital gains or losses
  • Filed for bankruptcy
  • Are completing a tax return for a deceased person

You can contact us for more information about the program, but we will not be taking any new appointments until the end of February.

To find a free tax preparation clinic in your area or to find out if you are eligible for help, go to canada.ca/taxes-help or call 1-800-959-8281
