Residents at Sarina Range enjoyed an evening of laughs at the outdoor Community Movie Night on Saturday, January 20. Adults and children alike were in stitches watching The Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Sarina Range residents continue to travel an extra two hours per day to get to work or school following the closure of the Sarina Range Road.

The event was proudly hosted by Mackay Regional Council and supported by a host of enthusiastic helpers and the Queensland Government’s We Are Queensland grants program as part of the community recovery work following severe tropical cyclone Debbie.

Sarina School Assistance Program

The Sarina Neighbourhood Centre was successful with an application for funding from Dalrymple Bay Coal Terminal to support families with back to school expenses.

This project involves the distribution of vouchers to assist identified families in being able to send their children to school.  Vouchers are made available to families in need of financial assistance to purchase books/school supplies and uniforms from the local Sarina newsagency, local children’s dress shop and school P & C associations in the Sarina district.

Vouchers will be available all year round, in particular at the start of the school year.  The project started prior to the start of school this year and already families in the Sarina district have benefited from this new scheme.

For more information please contact Margaret or Amanda on 4961 9283.

30th Anniversary Celebration Bob Wood Cultural Hall

Sarina icon, Bob Wood Cultural Hall, turned 30 on Australia Day and all of the Sarina community was invited to help celebrate.

The celebrations were free and there was entertainment and activities for all of the Sarina district.  The official part of the celebrations included recognition of local volunteers, unveiling of a new plaque and the cutting of the celebratory cake.

The hall was a bicentennial project in 1988 and named after the late Bob Wood who worked at Sarina Shire Council for 44 years, retiring in 1995.  All of Bob Wood's children attended the event.
