It's CTE Month!

The department invites you to join us in celebrating Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month on Twitter throughout February. CTE teachers, directors, and associations throughout the state work passionately to prepare students for success in postsecondary and career through our 16 nationally recognized career clusters. We encourage you to identify an inspiring individual and/or CTE program that has impacted students and their communities using the hashtags #TNCTEInspires and #CTEinTN.

Please share our logo, and participate in our CTE Month Twitter campaign to help highlight the incredible work happening in Tennessee.

CTE Educator Spotlight: Greg Lemmons, Knox County Schools

Each week in February, the department will highlight one outstanding CTE educator. This week, we celebrate Greg Lemmons, Criminal Justice teacher in Knox County Schools. Greg explains, "The greatest thing I can do for my students is to prepare them for their future postsecondary or career success. I believe CTE teachers have an advantage in this because we came from industry to the classroom. We can create lessons that are rooted from relevant, real-world experience." To read more about Greg, visit the department's blog, Classroom Chronicles.

Pathways Tennessee Receives National Attention for Collaborative Approach to College and Career Readiness

As we kick off CTE Month, national audiences are looking to Tennessee as a model for collaboration and innovation in preparing students for college and career. Jobs for the Future and the Pathways to Prosperity Network highlighted Pathways Tennessee in a national case study released this week, sharing Tennessee’s journey toward providing all students with the education and training needed for in-demand careers in their communities. Through the collaboration of multiple state agency leaders, regional intermediaries, industry partners, postsecondary institutions, and local school districts, more students across Tennessee are now engaged in aligned work-based learning experiences and early postsecondary opportunities that allow them to seamlessly transition to college and career.

This report includes tactics all educators, regions, and states can use to create partnerships with industry leaders to align course offerings and student experiences with local/regional labor market needs. Please join us in celebrating this case study of Pathways Tennessee and the strong work in each of our Pathways Tennessee regions! For additional information about Pathways Tennessee, please contact Jerre.Maynor@tn.gov.

National School Counseling Week begins Feb. 5

The division of college, career and technical education is excited to celebrate National School Counseling Week, beginning Feb. 5. This week is designed to celebrate the vital role school counselors play in all schools. This year’s theme, “School Counselors: Helping Students Reach for the Stars,” provides us with an opportunity to highlight the work of our state’s school counselors, and each day throughout the week has a unique topic on which we will focus.
