February News
Hello everyone,
Last month, John and I had the opportunity to return to two of my favorite music festivals in Tasmania, the Cygnet Folk Festival and MOFO. Cygnet features folk, roots, traditional music and workshops, singer songwriter types too. MOFO is more of an avant-garde experience of art and music and a little bit of everything. In some ways, the two festivals couldn't be more different, but they also have quite a bit in common. Much of this seems to be the audience eagerness and openness to hear something new, we even recognized several people in the crowds attending both festivals. Here's our favorite "new to us" discoveries from each fest:
Cygnet Folk Festival: Daniel J. Townsend, Claire Anne Taylor, Miriam Lieberman
MOFO: Emel Mathlouthi, Black Rock Band, Filastine & Nova, Rahim AlHaj, Karim Wasfi
It was also nice to run into Folk Alliance Australia at Cygnet Folk Festival. They were hosting a workshop on how to make it in the music business. Laura attended and took mental notes for anyone interested! More photos from both festivals can be found on our Instagram.

Speaking of Folk Alliance, it's February and that means the Folk Alliance International Conference is taking place this month. This is the 30th anniversary and will take place in Kansas City again, February 14-18, 2018. This year Laura, Matt The Electrician, Nels Andrews and David Berkeley will be representing the ComboPlate roster. We will be hosting a private showcase room again, Thursday/Friday/Saturday nights. Please come by room 652 and say hello - and hear some great music too! Check out our private showcase room schedule posted on our Facebook Page.

News from the roster:
Curtis McMurtry is happy to share he has an official showcase at SXSW next month.
David Berkeley is dusting off his Victorian threads in preparation for his return to Folk Alliance with his theatrical duo Son of Town Hall. The pair is honored to be invited to play this year’s Kerrville Folk Festival. David also wanted to share his video for a new and powerful song “The Faded Red and Blue”. It manages to speak to a lot of our current climate without driving us farther apart.
From Nels Andrews: Thanks to a grant I received from the local Santa Cruz arts council, I'll be releasing “Pigeon and the Crow” eponymous single from my new record, which is an original supernatural ballad, being released as a paired digital single and printed graphic novella featuring the song’s story as interpreted by illustrator Mike Benzce. Book available Fall 2018.
