The Board of the Cleveland Superior Arts Improvement Corporation elected its officers. Left to right: Dan LaGuardia of Lake Affect Studios is secretary,  Antonin Robert of Global X is Chairman, Karen Perkowski of Tower Press is treasurer, and Edna Akrish of Sole Business Systems is Vice-Chairman. The map to the right shows the target area of the Superior Arts Improvement District which is St. Clair Ave on the north, East 26th St on the east, Payne Ave. on the south and East 18th on the west.
Yesterday over 20 property owners from the Superior Arts Improvement District came together for the first Members Meeting to elect its Board of Directors for the Improvement Corporation that will govern the services to the District. This was the culmination of two years of work by Campus District, Inc and property owners in the Northern Campus District who wanted to improve safety and enhance the neighborhood. Over 60% of owners signed the petition to create the special improvement district. Funding from the new assessments on each property  will pay for Clean and Safe Ambassadors to patrol and clean litter and debris, access to an off-duty police officer, and provide  business attraction and marketing services, etc.

The Board of Directors, elected by the owner-members at the meeting, include Edna Akrish, owner of Sole Business System on Rockwell Ave,  Joseph Bowman, VP of Operations for the Plain Dealer on Superior Avenue,  Ryan Fioritto, Co-Owner of Tenable Services on Payne Avenue, Chad Jones representing the owners of Cleveland Bricks on St. Clair Ave.,  Dan LaGuardia, co-owner with his wife of Lake Affect Studios on East 25th Street,  Karen Perkowski, owner with her husband David of Tower Press and several other buildings on Superior, Antonin Robert, a principal of Global X, the largest property owner in the district, and Lynn Ruggeri, Chief Operating Officer of the Firefighters Credit Union on St. Clair Avenue.

Bobbi Reichtell, retiring executive director of the Campus District, thanked the owner-members and especially the Steering Committee who helped with outreach to fellow property owners to gain support for the special improvement district. She introduced Mark Lammon, incoming executive director who has deep experience in setting up and running business improvement districts.

Reichtell announced numerous positive developments in the Northern Campus District which included the opening of the new K-8 Campus International School on Payne Ave., in August 2017,  new management by the YWCA taking over Norma Herr Women's Shelter starting in April 2018 with additional County funding allowing it to be open 24/7 so that women will not have to line up outside and wait to get in, the renovation of the historic building at 2101 Superior for the new headquarters of Global X opening in March, a resident-led creative placemaking project on Superior turning a bus shelter into an "Art Stop" with rotating art on display,  and the City of Cleveland coming through with funding for off-duty police to be deployed at key times around the homeless, shelters.

The new Board of the Superior Arts Improvement Corporation will meet every other month and will publicize their meetings, which are open to all property owners in the district. For more information, contact Mark Lammon at mlammon@campusdistrict.org.

For the past several months, the Anchor Institution Taskforce  at Cleveland State University has been meeting to determine the anchor mission of Cleveland State and to develop a plan to institutionalize that mission throughout the entire university. The taskforce is expected to have a complete plan to deliver to President Berkman this spring.  It is critical in the development of this plan that we seek input from various constituencies including faculty, staff, students and the community.  As such, the taskforce will be conducting surveys and hosting meetings to collect information on various activities that our key constituencies participate that support an anchor mission and to solicit ideas for what should be the key pillars of our anchor mission.

In addition to the surveys, we hosting forums to discuss the concept of an anchor engaged institution.  The first forum was on October 19 with Steve Diner of Rutgers University Newark.  Another public event was held on November 18 at Trinity Cathedral where a panel discussed what it means to be an anchor institution. Until we announce the upcoming forums, please consider taking this SURVEY.

Who is an anchor Institution?
Nonprofit or public institutions that are rooted in place.  These institutions often have a mission to serve and are often the largest employers and purchaser of goods and services in many communities.

What is an Anchor Mission?
A commitment to intentionally apply an institution’s place-based economic power and human capital in partnership with community for long-term mutual benefit.

Since 2005, the Enterprise-led Cuyahoga Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition, as part of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, promotes economic prosperity by helping low-income families make use of the earned income tax credit (EITC) and other asset building programs.

Our free, high-quality tax preparation offers hardworking families an alternative to paid preparers, many of whom assess high filing fees and expensive refund advancement products. With nearly 1 in 5 Cuyahoga County residents living in poverty, it is crucial that taxpayers receive all of the credits due to them and their entire refund, free of filing fees. The Coalition serves families, individuals and seniors from across the County at 25 tax preparation locations. Through client surveys, we know that these refunds are spent locally which benefits the community in which our clients live and work.
