Construction at Columbia and Katie Kerr

RE: South Decatur Village located at 814 South Columbia Drive

The City of Decatur would like residents to be aware of development activity at the intersection S. Columbia and Katie Kerr. South Decatur Village has received approval to build a mixture of townhomes and single family homes (50+ total). After plan approval by the City Commission, plans were submitted for a land disturbance permit through the City’s Design, Environment & Construction Division. Staff has determined that the land disturbance plan meets all City requirements.

At this time, residents should expect to see a lot of activity at the building site starting with tree removal and site grading work. While a number of trees will be removed from the site, 18 trees will be preserved on the site and 86 trees will be required to be planted at the site after construction. Total tree canopy at the site upon completion will be 78,604 square feet. Final approval of the development will depend in part on staff confirmation of all required tree replacement.

Residents can expect land clearing work to begin as soon as January 25th. If you have any questions, please contact Design, Environment & Construction Division Director John Maximuk at
John.Maximuk@decaturga.com or 678.553.6570.

Teacher Appreciation

Parent/Teacher Conferences are just around the corner.  This is a time when our dedicated and loving WSA teachers spend long hours at school making the time to meet with all of their parents to share individually about each student.

It also means our parent community gets the opportunity to show them our appreciation and gratitude for all they do!  We are looking for a small group of parents to provide savory&sweet foods to nourish our teachers through the day on Wednesday, February 14th.

Please consider signing up for either a savory or sweet donation and note which location you are choosing: Reception Office (Education building) or the Kitchen in the Admin Office.  Please deliver between 8am-1pm at the designated location on the 14th.

Academe of the Oaks News

The Academe beekeepers are busy preparing for the season. All the equipment needs to be inspected and cleaned and pollinator plants made ready for the bees. We are fortunate that we have the guidance of Master Beekeeper Keif Schleifer. It is of the utmost importance for Keif that our students learn beekeeping and that they take the lead on this 'art'. Isabella, a WSA alum & AO junior, attended a day-long, intensive Beekeeping course in Forest Park, GA hosted by the Tara Beekeepers Association. The course instructors were impressed by her knowledge about honey bees and beekeeping. "Students like Isabella give us great hope for the future of beekeeping," said P.N. Williams, Founder and past President of the Tara Beekeepers Association.

Isabella and her classmate, Yenatfanta, are in charge of the bees at AO, and they will work together under the guidance of Keif. The ideal beekeeper needs patience, observation skills, knowledge and an awe for the beauty of nature. Other students are welcome to become beekeepers as well.

The plan is to build a beekeeping house as soon as possible for the equipment and a learning station. The learning station will have microscopes and materials to learn about bees.

INTRO TO BIODYNAMICS

Sunday, March 11, 2018
9:00 AM  12:00 PM

Growing organically is great, but it only scratches the surface of how deeply interconnected all the forces that go into plant and animal growth really are. Discover the atmospheric factors critical to plant growth, the growth gestures of plants, the role of lunar cycles and how biodynamics channels this knowledge into a holistic, closed system free from dependence on external inputs.  Enjoy a thorough introduction to biodynamic preparations and explore the intimate connections between soil and sky, animal and plant.

Join Darby Weaver, head farmer at Timpson Creek Farm, for an afternoon of Biodynamic growing instruction. During this workshop, the guiding principles of Biodynamic Agriculture will be highlighted and practical approaches to utilizing them on your own farm or garden will be detailed.
COST: $40; $30 for Homestead Atlanta Members.
