Process Translated

Erica Joy Baker, the subject for our Fortune Magazine shoot, was running a bit late. David (the first assist/ DT for the shoot) and I had already scouted and set up a number of portrait locations throughout the company she works at, Patreon. We were ready whenever she was. While she was settling into her day we set a few lights up around her desk and photographed her. The photos are unplanned, a little messy and totally spontaneous. There are funny shadows and some misfires… and then in the middle of the mistakes and the misfires, we shot this photo. It’s one of my favorites.

90% of editorial photography is, for me, making something awesome from something that isn't otherwise interesting. I love that challenge. A long time ago I gave up trying to make good images. I don't really care anymore if the image is good or bad. I show up. Bring lights. Watch the energy of the people there and notice the details. I try to get lost in it all, recording as I go.
