Wild Stick Drive

WWFHA needs more hockey sticks to support the Girls’ Try Hockey for Free sessions and the Learn to Play program – especially in the smaller sizes. Please consider donating a new or used stick that is 4’5” to 5’5” in length.

Give sticks to Jim Ericson, Equipment Manager, at Highland Ice Arena on Fridays (5pm-7pm), Saturdays (12pm-2pm), or Sundays (9am-12pm). Look for the stick bucket in the small rink alcove if he is on the ice.

QUESTION:
I want to watch Olympic women’s hockey with my daughter. What is the schedule for the US team?

ANSWER:
Because of the time difference between Korea and the US, you will definitely need to record some of these games!
  • Feb 10th vs Finland 11:45pm – 2:15am (PST)
  • Feb 13th vs Russia 4:15am – 6:45am (PST)
  • Feb 14th vs Canada 7:15pm – 8:45pm (PST)
Click here for more information about the US women’s team from the USA Hockey website.

How can I support my daughter when she thinks she has failed?

-- 10 Things to teach children about failure

WWFHA believes in the importance of learning through failure. Recovery from an error in hockey, a game of mistakes, often leads to future success.

The UK website BelievePerform serves to bring together those who have a passion for sport psychology with those who want a better understanding of the field. They share this infographic on teaching children about failure.

Calling College Coaches is a Critical Step

Calling coaches during the recruiting process is a critical step in developing a relationship with them, as they are recruiting players’ personalities as much as players’ skills.

Check out the ‘Everything You Need to Know About Calling College Coaches’ blog article on the latest tips, such as:
  • It’s a lot easier to call a coach if you’ve already emailed with them — rather than cold calling a coach you’ve never spoken to before.
  • Plan what you want to say ahead of time.
  • Write bullets about what you want to achieve: learning more about the program; hearing what the coach hopes for from their prospects; finding where you stand in the recruiting timeline.
  • Be prepared to introduce yourself briefly, whether you’re speaking to the coach directly, or on a voicemail.
  • Many coaches are restricted in the ways they can contact student-athletes by NCAA regulations. Talk to your high school or club coach before you call to see if they would be willing to speak on your behalf to the coach, and then leave their number when you reach out.
Click here to watch the short video and read more.

For a full list of possible questions to ask your potential coaches, contact Zoe Harris, executive director and WWFHA’s resource for the college recruiting process.
