Citizens Union Welcomes New Executive Director, Betsy Gotbaum

Citizens Union is pleased to announce the arrival of its new Executive Director, Betsy Gotbaum, former New York City Public Advocate and longtime ally of good government. Working closely with the Board of Directors and the staff, Ms. Gotbaum will be responsible for achieving the priorities of Citizens Union while building the organization’s fiscal strength.

"As a champion of good government and long-time distinguished public servant, Betsy exemplifies all of the qualities and principles that Citizens Union stands for,” said Citizens Union Board Chair Randy Mastro. “Indeed, for more than 120 years, we have championed honesty, integrity, transparency, and accountability in government. And we cannot imagine a better leader than Betsy Gotbaum to help us achieve our ambitious agenda to deliver for all New Yorkers the good government they deserve."

Ms. Gotbaum brings a wealth of experience after an accomplished career including appointments with Mayors John Lindsay, Abraham Beame, and David Dinkins. She was elected New York City Public Advocate in 2001, serving for eight years. Her nonprofit leadership includes raising millions of dollars and implementing new programs for both the New York City Police Foundation and the New York Historical Society. She is excited to be working with the staff of Citizens Union to strengthen access to voting in New York State while publishing voters’ guides, advocating for needed policy reforms, and providing information to interested first-time office seekers.

“I’m very proud to have been asked to serve Citizens Union and I’m looking forward to what’s coming for the organization,” Ms. Gotbaum stated. “New Yorkers need basic reforms to bring the promises of democracy into a cogent reality serving all in our great City and State.”
