ENRIQUE'S JOURNEY: CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR SONIA NAZARIO
Facing History and The Allstate Foundation proudly present a Community Conversation with Sonia Nazario, on Tuesday, February 6 at the Orpheum Theatre, 10:00-11:30 a.m. Nazario is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author who has written about social issues for more than two decades, most recently for the Los Angeles Times. Her astonishing bestseller Enrique’s Journey chronicles her reporting of a Honduran boy's epic journey to the United States to find his mother. By revealing the perils thousands of immigrants face each year as they attempt to reunite with their families, Nazario puts a personal face on one of the most challenging and divisive issues of our time. Told through a reporter’s eye, the book offers perspectives that fall on both sides of the national dialogue on immigration. The CBU Community is invited to join Facing History to hear unique perspectives from Nazario which foster empathy and bring new insight to one of today’s most divisive topics. The event is FREE but requires registration to attend — click here to register!
GOT ETHICS? WHY DO WE COMPROMISE OUR ETHICAL STANDARDS?
Have you ever wondered why individuals compromise their ethical standards? The CBU campus is invited to attend a forum addressing this topic on Tuesday, February 6 from 1:00 to 1:50 p.m. in Spain Auditorium. Come learn why ethics is so critical and what happens when ethical codes are compromised. Understand why our personal ethical codes are different and why standardized ethical codes must be maintained by any business. Can ethics be learned? Come find out why and join the discussion! The presentation, sponsored by the Counseling Center and Student Life, will be made by Dr. Jennifer Weske (Accounting).

News at CBU

President John Smarrelli Jr.
was the guest on "This is the Day," a half-hour talk show on The CatholicTV Network, on January 30. Click on the video above to watch the entire interview.

CBU CONNECTED TO CHARTER SCHOOLS, REPLACING JUBILEE SCHOOLS
New Day Schools Inc. filed letters of intent with the Tennessee Department of Education and Shelby County Schools on February 1 to submit applications to open nine charter schools at Jubilee Catholic Schools’ current locations. The Jubilee Catholic Schools Network will cease operations at the end of the 2018-19 school year, as announced by the Catholic Diocese of Memphis in January. Dr. John Smarrelli (CBU President) is president of the New Day board of directors, and Dr. Ric Potts (Education) and Emily Greer (Trustee, '84) are members of the board.
"Our primary goal in forming this new network of charter schools, which will be called Compass Community Schools, is to continue providing an excellent educational experience for the community currently served by Jubilee Catholic Schools, although entirely independent from the Catholic Diocese," Smarrelli said. "We look forward to what the future holds for our network and the students and families we hope to soon serve."
If approved as public charter schools, Compass Community Schools would hold open enrollment and serve any student who applies, would be tuition-free and would not include a faith-based element.
Local news coverage for the planned schools has thus far included several articles in The Commercial Appeal ("CBU president heading new group applying to replace closing Jubilee Catholic schools," "Growth, partnerships with CBU part of the plan to replace Jubilee schools"), plus the Memphis Business Journal, Chalkbeat, and The Daily News, as well as television reports by Local 24 and Fox 13
