Calling All Advocates!

The Governor unveiled his budget proposal last week and it was not good news for Library Aid:

Proposed State Library Aid: $91.6 million
This represents a 3% cut from 2017 funding levels which would mean a loss of over $70,000 in the MHLS operating budget and a reduction in the amount of Local Library Services Aid your library receives.

Proposed Library Construction Aid: $14 million

This represents a 42% cut from 2017 funding levels, which would mean a $378,392 decrease in available construction aid funds for the MHLS region for the coming grant cycle.

Here are three things you can do immediately to help with this year's advocacy effort:

Help more NY library supporters get enrolled in the NYLA Online Advocacy Center, numbers matter! The more people we can activate when the time is right, the bigger impact we can have with the legislature. Drive as much traffic as you can to this sign up form: http://bit.do/NYLAsignup
Help us tell the story with photos and numbers! Participate in the Real People. Real Dollars. Campaign at your library! Contact Ann Sarrantonio at the circulation desk for help with the ‘Library Value Calculator’.
Join us, and encourage others to join us, in Albany for Library Advocacy day on February 28! MHLS makes the day easy by scheduling meetings with each Assemblymember and Senator that represents our region and through arranging transportation. Thanks to the generosity of area Friends Groups the ticket to ride the bus this year is just $5! That's a lot less than it would cost you to park in Albany let alone the cost of gas! How To Love Your Library:

CONTRIBUTE 

Donate your time, money, and expertise to your library. 
Remember your library in your estate planning. 
Write a check to your library’s Friends group 
Give to the library through your company’s matching program for charitable giving.

BE A FRIEND 

Join the Friends of the Rosendale Library. We meet on the 2nd Sat. of every other month, next meeting is March 10 at 10am at the Rosendale Café. 
Volunteer to work at the Friends Book Sale in July. 
Donate your good condition used books to the Friends. 
Help maintain the Friends website.

VOLUNTEER 

Offer a committed helping hand to your library’s staff.

PROMOTE 

Write to your state and federal legislators and insist that library service be viewed (and funded) as a necessary public service. Click here to sign up for the New York Library Association’s list of trusted library advocates. 
Write a letter to the editor of your newspapers or call in to a radio talk show to let them know how important your library is to you and how important it is to give the libraries full funding. 
Attend Library Advocacy Day in Albany on Feb. 28. Library advocates will be meeting with legislators to show support for full library finding. Contact the library for information about getting on the bus to Albany that day. The Friends of the Rosendale Library will even pay for your bus ticket!  The Division of Library Development has calculated that for every $1 in state aid to the Mid-Hudson Library System our library’s community received $13 worth of services. That is a fantastic return on investment we should all be concerned about preserving!

From the Board

As we move into the Library's 60th year the Board has said goodbye to two important members. Our Secretary/Treasurer Nancy Hertzig has retired after 20 years of excellent service that we've always appreciated.  Our trustee and vice-president Jacky Davis-Soman has stepped down to pursue other community volunteer needs.  We miss you both and wish you well!

We are fortunate that two other talented women have been recommended to the Board.  Teresa Howe is now our Bookkeeper and Lori Giordano our recording Secretary. Welcome to our Library!

These changes mean we have two positions to fill on the board going forward, a trustee and a Treasurer.  This is a great year to join us and be a motivating force for the future of our fine Library and community; applications are available at the desk.

January is our annual election of board officers; Cherilyn Craig was nominated and elected to another term as President, and Beth King was nominated and elected as Vice-President.  Our meetings are the third Wednesday of every month and open to the community. Please consider joining us to serve the future of the Rosendale Library. The Secret of 1945
by Barbara Freer

In June 1945, Bobbie, an American, Protestant girl, was taken to a French prison. The ten-year-old and her grandparents had survived WWII in German occupied France. Bobbie’s parents, living in America, had received no news of their family for many years and finally heard in early June 1945 that their relatives were living in liberated Metz, France and were safe. By June, Bobbie and her grandparents had disappeared and all contact was lost again. This memoir was written by a local author who will be discussing her book and her war time experiences at the library. Please join us for an interesting discussion.
