DWDr: Where to Dance. When to Dance. Why to Dance.

Howdy FDFs,

Like Bill Murray in that movie, I’m back again and I guess we’re going to have to keep doing this until we finally get it right.  As I promised when I went into my semi-retirement, like Punxsutawney Phil, I’ll pop my head out of my burrow every now and then when something so terrific surfaces that not telling you all about it would be considered criminal negligence on my part.

Before we get to the reason for this blast from the past, let’s start with a couple of honorable mentions as an appetizer.

Friday, February 2, 2018 at 9:00 pm
Just like me, it’s been I been awhile since they surfaced, but they’re a guaranteed good time every time 2000 LBS OF BLUES shows up to play. If you haven’t already made Friday night plans, I think I just helped you out. 2000 LBS OF BLUES at HARVELLES SANTA MONICA- 1432 4th Street (near Broadway) Santa Monica, CA 90401 - 310-395-1676 http://santamonica.harvelles.com

Also on Friday night:
THE MICHAEL CARTWRIGHT GROUP is scheduled (I say scheduled because the online calendar for CdM and who actually shows up to play can be pretty nebulous) to perform live WIACAIG music this evening from 9:00 to midnight in the lobby lounge at HOTEL CASA DEL MAR - 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica - (310) 581-7714. http://www.hotelcasadelmar.com/los-angeles-hotel-lobby.

And down the way in the Playa, all the way from San Francisco the ALPHA RHYTHM KINGS are making their debut this evening at RUSTY'S RHYTHM. As it’s a celebration of Mardi Gras, Queen Rustina has asked you to dress like a football team or a Batman villain and wear Purple, Gold, Green attire. ALPHA RHYTHM KINGS at CLUB RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB, in the Elks Lodge, 8025 W. Manchester, Playa Del Rey, (park and enter in the back.) See more information at http://rustyfrank.com

And now, the reason for my special report
Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 9:00 pm
**** PICK OF THE NIGHT, AND POSSIBLY OF THE YEAR (at least so far)******
A long time ago when LA was still trying to be a dance town with a strong preference for live music, a club called The Derby was the undisputed king of the neo swing movement. I can’t say every act that played there was a winner, but there were some that were SO GOOD that if I had a time machine like Dr. Who, there are certain nights I might play on an endless loop as my personal version of heaven. But like the man from Gallifrey says, “Some points in time are fixed and you can never go back.” But tonight you can get pretty darned close when RED YOUNG, who once fronted the transcendently good band, Red and the Red Hots, returns to SoCal from his home in Texas to give us a taste of what a Saturday night could be if the universe conspired to make sure you have a great night.  Last time he did this a few months ago was hands down the best time I ever had at PBDA even though my favorite dance partner couldn’t make it.  This time my work prevents me from reliving that joy, but if at all possible DON’T MISS THIS SHOW!!!!  RED YOUNG AND HIS HOT HORNS is back in P’Dena tonight at PBDA – at GRACE HALL (behind the church), 73 N. Hill Avenue, Pasadena, 91106
www.pasadenaballroomdance.com  Go, have fun and have a dance for poor little me who can’t make it.  ARRRRGH!!!!!

I’m sure there’s more out there like: Other don’t miss dates:

Saturday, February 17
JAMES INTVELD AND HIS SWING SINNERS, turn back time to 1998-o'clock at PBDA, 8:00 to 11:30 PM. at, GRACE HALL, 73 N. Hill Ave. in Pasadena (behind the church). Easy free parking in the church lot. See more info at http://www.pasadenaballroomdance.com/

Wednesday, March 14
THE INCOMPARABLE BARBARA MORRISON spends this evening at RUSTY'S RHYTHM CLUB, in the Elks Lodge, 8025 W. Manchester, Playa Del Rey, (park and enter in the back.) See more information at http://rustyfrank.com

FUTURE DANCE DATES:
I don't know when Josh Smith will be back at Harvelles but the one time I caught his act it was mindblowingly good!  I’ll let you all know if he comes back again and  this time around and we’ll own that place

You can stop reading now as I’m going back into hibernation for a bit.

The DWDr Final Quote
I danced with everyone at the wedding. The women were all brilliant, the men… were a bit shy.”
