Making a Case for the .ng Brand as Local Content

Sometimes last month, a young man wanted to set up a website to handle Students Admission Tests. He chose the name edusat. Unfortunately, edusat.com was already registered and put up for sale. What was the Cost? A mere $5,000.00 (Five Thousand US Dollars) was the offer for would-be buyers. For our young innovator, this was a No No.

I engaged via Social media and offered the alternative - edusat.ng. The website is now up and running, using the .ng domain string that I offered as an alternative. Of course, the .com domain name is still on offer for sale. Another successful story of a young Nigerian, who is providing content that is suitable for the local market. You can visit the website (www.edusat.ng) to appreciate what he has done with the domain name.

It is our joy to enlighten, educate, promote and offer the .ng string to those who need the right domain for their Internet Presence. The .ng brand projects our identity, culture, industries, heritage and businesses. Imagine the impact we can make, when our artists, footballers, important personalities and worthy .ng ambassadors, etc. proudly fly the .ng brand. Definitely, the world would listen.

TECH SPEAK

REQUIREMENTS FOR WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT
There are four (4) basic requirements in creating a website and getting it online, namely a Domain Name, Web Host Server Space, the website design and your website content. It is very important a business owner/ website owner considers the essence of his/her business and the website before embarking on the business. The essence of being online is to draw the required attention to your business/brand and grow the business. You can reach millions of customers from the comfort of your home when you have a thriving online business.
Domain Name:
The first step is choosing and registering a domain name, a unique name which would have relevance to the type of business. A domain name is akin to your street address; it is your unique identity on the global space, the Internet.  Visit NiRA website www.nira.org.ng for the list of NiRA Accredited Registrars https://www.nira.org.ng/ng-registrars that provide the platform for domain name registration.
The website domain name is the driving force of the website and there are considerations required to propel the success of the business. The name must be sufficiently attractive and relevant to the business for potential customers to visit the website. The name must be sufficiently simple, concise, short, and memorable. The domain name extension should have high search engine relevancy.

FEEDBACK
Our colleagues at the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) put in so much that one can only do the minimum to support their efforts. Looking back, it has been a long walk.

A fellow engineer activist, also retired, just reminded me, in a response post today, of those early days of mid-nineties when the dot-ng ccTLD was a knotty issue. It was a time that “Something Bush” (I've forgotten his name now) was Nigeria's Point of Contact/ Host signatory at ICANN.

The post: "Titi, you, it was who told us in NSE Council why you insisted that COREN, NSE & ACEN must register the .ng domain and we all bought your argument and indeed that institution (COREN) and Associations (NSE and ACEN) became among the firsts if not the firsts to register as such in Nigeria to the best of my knowledge".

Yes, he is right. But please add NCC to the list. I am talking only of INSTITUTIONS, please.  The rest is history.
