Dalat International School News - Penang, Malaysia
9 February, 2018

As we continue to focus on our theme “It’s Still Not About Me,” I’d like to share with you a video. This video was sent to me by someone suggesting that it as a great illustration of our theme and encouraged me to share it with the community. I watched and agreed that it would be worthy of sharing.

Michael Jr is a comedian who has made a name for himself and is quite famous in America. He is unique in that he is one of very few comedians who keeps his routine and humor clean. His shows can be watched by families and enjoyed by younger kids.

In this video, Michael Jr talks about a paradigm shift in his perspective on life in which he switched from trying to get laughs to wanting to give laughter and he explains how this changed his life. He continues by explaining the concept of life from a comedian’s perspective. That humor is about what is referred to as “the set up” and then the punchline.

Please do take the time to watch this video clip. It is about 10 minutes long. The link takes you to the midpoint of his Ted Talk to where his presentation applies to our theme. Some of you may want to watch the whole thing, but without a doubt, if you watch the clip from where the link starts, you may gain a new perspective on life and our theme.

Chinese New Year School Holiday
구정 연휴 학교 휴일
农历新年学校假期

There will be no school Thursday and Friday, 15 and 16 February, in honor of Chinese New Year. Classes will resume on Monday, 19 February, for MS and HS. Monday, 19 February is ES Parent-Teacher Conferences with no classes for ES students. Classes will resume for ES on Tuesday, 20 February.

Parent-Teacher Conferences
초등학교 학부모 면담일
小学部家教会议
On 19 February, there will be no school for elementary students. Instead, teachers will be conferencing with parents. Your conference time has been scheduled and will be communicated via email and through your teacher’s newsletter. Here a few ways parents can make the most of their conference time:
  1. Be on time. The elementary division is unique in that we schedule appointments for parents. This minimizes wait time. Please be considerate of the teacher’s and other parents’ schedules.
  2. Honor the time limit. If you need more than your allotted 15 minutes, please reschedule another appointment time.
  3. Ask questions. Your child’s teacher is happy to address any questions or concerns you may have.
  4. Be relaxed and be yourself. Teachers are looking forward to talking with you one on one. They value your partnership and want to get to know you better.
  5. Ask for a translator. If you are not comfortable conferencing in English, please arrange for or ask your teacher’s assistance in securing a translator.

Spirit Week: 12–14 February
연합을 위한 스피릿 주간
校园精神周:2月12-14日
Purpose: To promote school unity between grades PK to 12. Dress up in the following daily themes of Spirit Week:
  • Monday, the 12th (Spirit Day): Show your spirit for the Dalat Eagles by wearing yellow and blue! Feathers are appreciated too.
  • Tuesday, the 13th (Crazy Day): Get crazy with a mismatched outfit and wild hair. The more you clash and flash, the better!
  • Wednesday, the 14th (Holiday Day): Celebrate CNY and/or Valentine’s Day by wearing red. Or, if you want to be extra spirited, dress up as your Chinese birth year animal.
*For all of the days, if uniform shorts aren’t worn, other shorts must be finger-length. No skin-tight clothing please. If a teacher deems an outfit as inappropriate, parents will have to bring a change of clothing immediately. Bottom line, please don’t distract learning with your spirit.

PTO Update
학부모회새 소식
家教协会会讯
Thank you for ordering over 1,500 cookies during our PTO Valentine’s Day cookie fundraiser! We are looking forward to getting the cookies baked and passed out to classrooms and lockers on Valentine’s Day. Thank you for supporting the teachers and students of Dalat.

And while the cookies are cooling, we are already planning our next event — the International Food Fair! The event is planned for Friday, 9 March, from 4 to 6 p.m. Please consider attending a quick informational meeting this coming Monday, 12 February, at 2:30 p.m. in the student center. We will discuss which countries would like to be represented with a table at the food fair and explain how the event will run. This is PTO’s biggest and most attended event, so come be a part of the food and fun!
