Campus Sustainability Highlights

UC released 2017 Annual Sustainability Report

All 10 University of California campuses now have on-site solar power, and more progress is in the works. Over the last year, UC campuses made big strides toward zero-emission vehicles, with UC Irvine converting its entire bus fleet to electric. Campuses also cut water use, saving enough water to fill 125 Olympic-size swimming pools.
 

UC forms research university coalition to accelerate local climate action  

UC unveiled the University Climate Change Coalition, or UC3, along with 13 other North American research universities that will collaborate on a model to help local communities achieve their climate goals and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.


UCLA launches program to reduce impact of greenhouse gas emissions for air travel

UCLA has become one of the first universities to establish a program to mitigate university business related air travel emissions. A travel mitigation fee will be applied to all domestic and international trips. The funds will be made available to the campus through a competitive process to finance projects that make a measurable reduction in UCLA's greenhouse gas emissions.
 

UCSF makes progress on reducing water use

UCSF has made great progress in regards to systemwide water use reduction goals. Already, the campus has reduced water use by 47% from its 2007 baseline, exceeding the UCOP 2025 water reduction goal by 11%.

The Student Environmental Resource Center at UC Berkeley unveils collection of environmental justice resources

The Environmental Justice Resource collection is a living, growing group of readings, toolkits, books, videos, and activities concerning the intersection of environment and social justice. The purpose of the collection is to fill some of the gaps we have in mainstream environmentalism and to provide tools to facilitate these conversations in environmental spaces. If you have suggestions or know of any resources that should be added, please email Environmental Justice Associate Amanina at amanina.shofry@berkeley.edu or SERC at serc@berkeley.edu with the subject EJ Resource Submission.
 

2018 UNH Sustainability fellowship accepting applications

The fellowships are based in organizations and communities throughout New England and offer students the opportunity to gain experience addressing a real issue involving topics such as climate, energy, land use, transportation, preservation, ecology, health, food, research, outreach, communications, policy, finance, and more. Applications are due February 14, 2018. 


AASHE Conference call for proposals

The 2018 AASHE Conference & Expo will examine the critical role of higher education in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AASHE 2018 is looking for proposals from a diverse group of attendees to examine how higher education institutions can support, advance, and align themselves with SDGs. The submission deadline is February 16, 2018. 
 

2018 California Higher Education Sustainability call for proposals

CHESC is seeking speakers who have crossed silos within their institutions to create sustainable change, infused concepts of sustainability into curriculum, and/or pursued research questions related to sustainability. They are especially excited about speakers that have created a connection across academic and operational departments. Campuses are also encouraged to consider applying for award categories and be recognized at the statewide conference. Applications are due February 16, 2018.
