SkillsUSA State Contest Exams Update

The SkillsUSA Tennessee State Association will not host or require any exams to be given prior to the state conference. Currently, Related Technical Math, Medical Math, Medical Terminology, and Quiz Bowl will have a written exam for 2018. The Quiz Bowl exam will be given on Monday afternoon March 19 as part of the contest orientation session. For the contests not listed above that have a written exam, the exam may be given as part of the state contest on March 19-20 as determined by the contest chair. It is recommended that contestants bring a pencil to their competition.

Additionally, SkillsUSA Tennessee will provide our gold medalists with either a copy of our old exam to study and/or a voucher for the SkillConnect exam related to their contest to assist with preparing for national competition. We are confident this will provide our contestants with the opportunity to prepare for the written exam portion at nationals that may not be included at state level due to our time constraints.

New Competition Updates

Automated Manufacturing Technology - The contest evaluates teams for employment in integrated manufacturing technology fields of computer aided drafting/design (CAD), computer aided manufacturing (CAM), and computer numerical controlled machining (CNC). CAD operators construct the part geometry; the CAM operator generates the tool paths; and the CNC operator sets up and machines the part. Plotting is not a scored event; however, the contestants must be able to generate a plot file that will be used to send their data to the plotter.

Barbering
Barbering will be advancing to the national level, and is open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with barbering and cosmetology as the occupational objective.

Collision Damage Appraisal and Total Loss Evaluation Technology
New contest is open to active SkillsUSA members enrolled in programs with collision damage appraisal and total loss evaluation as an occupational objective.

Join as a professional member to have access to the 2018 SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards from which the contests will be based.

Championships Clothing and Tools App Updated

SkillsUSA has updated the “SkillsUSA: Clothing and Tools” app for 2018. This is a great starter resource, but it does not replace the SkillsUSA Championships Technical Standards. Instead, it connects users to SkillsUSA’s membership site, where educators can join as professional members to receive the full standards at no charge.
For each contest, the app includes an overview, clothing requirements, and eligibility and safety guidelines, as well as lists the specific tools, equipment or materials that contestants need to provide.
It is offered completely free of charge for students, instructors and SkillsUSA business partners.
The app is available now in both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store.
This app was created and sponsored by Pearson.

SkillsUSA SLSC App

SkillsUSA Tennessee is launching a new state conference mobile app. The app is available now in both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store. As conference details are released, the app will update with new data. The state conference schedule is available now in our mobile app.

Transportation Career Fairs Open for Students

State association directors, the Collision Repair Education Foundation is hosting transportation career fairs across the nation, averaging over 300 transportation students at each event. The foundation is inviting high-school and postsecondary collision, automotive and diesel programs to come and meet industry to see the array of opportunities that exist for them. Students who attend receive access to a S/P2 online résumé writing course and a professional technician shirt. If you assist with facilitating student mock interviews at one of the career fairs, the Collision Repair Education Foundation will make a donation to your state association.

Please let your instructors know about a transportation career fair in their area. A list of where these career fairs will be held is located click here. For specific address locations, contact Christen Battaglia or Brandon Eckenrode.

Other career fair ideas include:
  • have a table at a career fair to present the new SkillsUSA Career Essentials to instructors and students;
  • determine if there is interest in coordinating a career fair at your state conference next year; or
  • plan to hold your own career fair in your area.
