March, April & May 2018 Newsletter

Can someone please tell me where summer went???????  Now autumn is amongst us and we can look forward to all the lovely things that comes with this time of year..... the leprechauns emerge 17th March for St Patricks day, then bunnies in March as Easter approaches, and the many rabbitoh's supporters we seem to have here at Lakeside start getting boisterous as the NRL battle begins, more leaves fall as our trees start to do their autumn strip tease for us, as well as remembering our Anzacs in April and our mothers in May.   With so much to do,  soon it will be winter.   But take the time to sit down, enjoy a cuppa and have a read of our Lakeside Autumn Newsletter.

Bus
We are glad Ross has recovered and is back driving our courtesy bus for our shopping trips.  But we still haven't found anyone to drive the bus for the outings that Ross use to put on for our residents.  If you know of anyone who is willing and able to drive the bus and organise bus trips, please get them to let us know at the office.

Electrician
Aztec Electrical Services is no longer in business and if you need an electrician we now use;
Dan Aird
Aird Electrical Services
Ph: 0411231372

Recycling
If the recycling bins are full please leave your recycling until the bins have room and not leave your recycling next to the bins.  We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you.  We have had a few teething problems along the way changing over to our new system, but we are sure we have them all sorted out now.

Firewood
If you know of anyone who would like free aged firewood and can chop it up themselves, ask them to call us at the office and we will organise access to the property next door.

Fire Hoses
The rule for the fire hoses is the same as it always has been.  Fire hoses are to not be used for your personal gardens or washing your boat, home or car, they can however be used to water public grassed areas and public gardens. But are mainly for emergency use only.

Parking

News
We have CCTV Cameras being installed around the office and on the office veranda, they will be able to monitor the pool gates, boom gates, office and entry to our village.  We are hoping this will eliminate kids loitering, strangers using the pool and the continual boom gate damage.

NOTE
  • When calling an ambulance, use your mobile phone as the Ambulance can track the call with GPS
  • There are no private bookings taken for the barn.  If you need to hire a hall Colongra Bay Hall at the end of Kamilaroo Ave charges $10 per hour for hire and the facilities are great.
Thanks for the thanks
We have been getting a lot of positive feedback this summer with our residents acknowledging staff members for various jobs and maintenance around the village.  Special thanks were mentioned to us for the great job our groundsman Ryan does and Liam's friendliness.

New Residents
We would like to welcome the new residents to our village;
  • Allison McLean
  • Pamela Mamo
  • Leslie & Sandra Barnes

Sales News

We have had 25 property inspections in the last 3 months, with 3 sales in this time, selling 2 new homes and 1 preloved home.  If you are thinking about putting your home on the market, give us a call and we will be happy to give you an appraisal.

If you are thinking of listing with a Real Estate Agent
we have a better offer.....

Not only is our sales commission only 3%, incl GST.. but if you exclusively list your home with us for 3 months or more and while we have it listed we sell it for you, you will receive 12 weeks free rent.

This offer is for a limited time only and will make selling with us better value than selling through a real estate agent.

Library News

GARDEN EXPO.    The Library Group, with the support of Management are orchestrating a Garden Expo for the Village. This will take place over the coming months, with the judging of the gardens offered for consideration, in September. This leaves you all plenty of time to decide:

  • If you want to opt out.
  • If you want your garden considered.
  • Which category (or categories) you wish to have your garden included.
  • The work you need to do to win yourself an award in any particular item.

The judging will be done in early September, by an impartial judge, and awards will be presented at a lavish Afternoon Tea in the Community Hall, at a date to be decided.

Keep your eye out for the information flyer and please use the reply slip to indicate your interest (or not) as the case may be.  When you see the categories you will realise that you do not need green fingers to be an entrant. All types of gardens can be considered for the Garden Expo.

LIBRARY REVAMP.  It has become increasingly obvious to our little group of re-shelvers and cataloguers that many authors now have books written in a variety of genres. For example, two very popular writers, James Patterson and Norah Roberts now have books in Thriller, General and even Romance. This applies to many other lesser known authors and leads to some confusion when putting books back on shelves and when deciding what colour dot to give them when they are processed.

So we have decided to make an integrated collection and the work will begin very soon. This will mean that for a few weeks the Library may be in a bit of turmoil, but it will be well worth the inconvenience and the work involved.

  • The DVDs will remain the same.
  • The Nonfiction will be removed to a separate and more accessible area.
  • All books will continue to be marked with the appropriate sticker colour. ( orange: Mystery Thriller / blue: General Fiction / pink: Romance / yellow: Biography and True Stories)   Please note that a gold sticker on a book with another colour denotes Historical Fiction.
  • All books by a particular author will then be housed together, so all Patterson books will have the letters PAT on the spine and the appropriate colour sticker to show whether it is a Mystery, Thriller, Romance or General Fiction book. All Norah Roberts (JD Robb) will be the same. And the same will follow for all the fiction novels in the Library.

If you have any comments to make on these plans, please make your thoughts clear by dropping a note into the mail box for No.10 or the mail box for No. 212. We welcome courteous, sensible suggestions, and even better when they are backed up by offers of assistance.

Book Reviews:  We have two books in the biography section (yellow dot) that are written by two very well-known authors, Bryce Courtney and Danielle Steele.  They both follow the same theme of telling the true story of the illness and death of each of their beloved sons.

Danielle Steele departs from her normal romantic sizzler to chart the dreadful course taken by her boy, Nick Traina, through the terrors of manic depression (now known as Bi-Polar). She outlines the desperate struggle to keep him from suicide during his teen years and the devastation when he was finally successful, around his 19thbirthday. He had developed from a bright loving child who taught himself to read at age three, into a dark, unhappy young man who was unable to cope with the ravages of this awful condition. “His Bright Light”: The Story of Nick Traina by Danielle Steele. STE with a yellow dot.

Bryce Courtney has a very different story. The book is a tribute to the author's son, Damon Courtenay, a haemophiliac who contracted HIV/AIDS through an infected blood transfusion. The title refers to the date of Damon's death, 1 April 1991 (April Fools' Day). It outlines the social attitudes of the times with the shame of Aids making the disease a hidden dirty secret and highlights the way Damon and the Courtney family faced this tragic issue together.  “April Fools’ Day” by Bryce Courtney. COU with a yellow dot.

The Biography section ( soon to be integrated with all other sections) has a wealth of true stories, life experiences and wonderful gossip, all mixed up with humour and pathos, just as is the way in the real world. Browse amongst the Yellow Dot books to find something that you really relate to, and really enjoy. Each one is a glimpse into the lives of those we hold in esteem, and admiration, or those we can identify with as well as those we have come to despise and rejoice in their downfall.

The Library Group is a loose knit friendship group which welcomes readers and book lovers to its ranks. Come along on the first Monday of the month at 2.00pm and join us for coffee and chat. We promise not to put you to work unless you really want to be involved and then we will train you to help us process new arrivals and to re-shelve returned materials.

Social Club Happenings
Welcome to the Lakeside leisure Village Social Club update for the first quarter of 2018.

Our committee is still working hard to provide enjoyable functions and entertainment for the residents of our village and as usual our efforts have been appreciated.

There has been not quite as much activity over Christmas / New Year period although we have had two very good functions during that time.

Our Christmas function held on Saturday 9th December in the Barn was an outstanding success with many residents enjoying excellent entertainment provide by our usual DJ and our new singer recruited from outside the local Woolworths store, he proved so popular that he has already been booked to entertain us at our Christmas in July function.

As usual the food for this function was delicious and well received.

Our second Trivia Afternoon for 2018 will be held in the library on Tuesday 27th February at 2.00pm and, as usual the cost will be $2.00 which is inclusive of afternoon tea, and everyone is welcome to come.

On Sunday 4th February instead of the normal barbeque the club put on a ‘Picnic In the Park’ at the Barn where the order of the day was a selection of cold meats and salad accompanied by bread rolls and sandwiches with the usual dessert for afters. And to no surprise this was much enjoyed by those who attended.

I would like to mention the good work done by Rhonda Dorahy and the crew in providing an excellent sausage sizzle for Australia Day at the Barn in January.

At this point in time our membership stands at a healthy 125.

Members and residents can look forward to something a little different later in the year as our committee endeavour to keep you entertained.

Our next function will be a barbeque to be held on Sunday 4th March at the Barn with the usual hamburgers and introducing steak sandwiches along with our scrumptious desserts and salads.

Once again thanks to the hard working committee and those people who assisted with our barbeques and other functions, we look forward to your continued support of the social club and remember everyone is welcome to attend our happenings and membership of the club is only $5.00 per year.

Bill Walker

Secretary on behalf of the Lakeside Leisure Village Social Club.

Just a couple of potato jokes to fill in space.

A:  A commentator

Q:  What do you call a lazy Kangaroo?
