Principal’s Message
It was a delight to see so many year 7 parents on the first day with their children, and the parents who also stayed for a cuppa and a chat. Currently we have 213 students enrolled in year 7 and 893 across 7 -10.
ADHS has responded to a number of suggestions by parents to form an ADHS Parent Support Group. If you are interested in asking questions or contributing your ideas come along to our first meeting on 7th March from 5.30 – 6.30pm in the e-Hub.
All ADHS students will receive the ACER SPIN II devices (charging cable & Wacom pen) sponsored by the ACT Govt on 15th February. Parents are asked to support students in bringing the device fully charged to school every day. To support the initiative ADHS will be holding a Google Summit on 22nd & 23rd February for year 7 students. The Summit will inspire and motivate students to engage across the Google platform.
Parent Forums
Alfred Deakin High values our parent community and we invite you to be partners in learning. We would like to harness the support of families and engage with you throughout your student’s experience in our school. This year we will again conduct a number of parent forums to discuss the requirements for year 10, Australian Curriculum, assessment, GAFE and other topics that you might suggest. The term 1 Forums are as follows:
- Year 10 Information Night on February 21st from 6.00 pm. Staff will advise parents on requirements for year 10 Certification, Road Ready, Work Experience and other significant issues/events for our year 10 students.
- Year 7 Information Night on February 28th from 5.30 – 7.30 pm. This will be an opportunity to experience your student’s timetable, meet their teachers, and alert them to any issues/concerns/aspirations you have in their education. All parents are invited to have cuppa & supper at the conclusion of the evening. Students are welcome to attend.
- Year 9 Parents Information Night on March 14th from 5.30-6.30pm. This is an evening for parents to hear from the year coordinators regarding curriculum, unit outlines, assessment and WEX.
- Parent – Teacher evening
- 3rd April from 4 – 6 pm.
- 9th April from 4 – 6 pm
Parents can discuss student progress over the term with each of the teachers. Interview times are five minutes long, but additional time can be scheduled on request – before, during or in the days following. Booking information is issued with the Progress Reports, issued on Wednesday 28th March.
Voluntary Contributions
ADHS encourages all parents to make their voluntary contributions soon. These funds are essential to enhancing student learning outcomes, improving the physical environment and amenities across the school. Parents most commonly say that their choice for ADHS is due in part to the presentation of the school and these funds assist in projects such as painting, carpeting, new furniture and resources for student learning.
During the summer break a number of improvements were made to our school environs including
- Lift access to the music rooms and a new toilet
- Footpath installed alongside the oval
- Staff toilets completely refurbished and staff common room (paint and carpet)
- Refurbished room 210 to accommodate an LSU (air con, paint, furniture, blinds etc)
- Oval resurfaced, especially in front of soccer goals
- Decking outside the new kitchen for a school Café (in progress)
- First Aid room refurbished (paint, new bed linen & storage, air conditioner)
Andrew Bealing (Board Chair) has accepted an exciting offer in WA to further pursue his career as a Qantas pilot. He has tended his resignation and his family are now settled in the far west! I thank
him for his contribution to ACT Public Education and assistance in the governance of ADHS through 2017. Andrew was especially active in the Future of Education discussions across the ACT and worked with the Directorate to present to the ACT community. We welcome Ms. Sigrid Tijs to the Board (on a countback!). We are currently seeking nominations for a two year tenure for an ADHS parent. Check out the tab below for details.
